HI Janice,

Sometimes, cholesterol is not due to what you eat. For example, my family runs low. Even mine is slightly below normal and I eat eggs, cheese and butter. No meat. I laugh because it always makes the doctors scratch their heads because I am a large woman.

It has to do with inherited factors. My friend had high cholesterol and restricted consumption of eggs and cheese and has not eaten meat for over thirty years. She cannot get it down with diet. The doctor was always harping on her to lose weight and she did, like over 30 pounds and it changed nothing.

Some things we are just born with.

I am at CKD level 3 and had high cholesterol, and do not eat the type of foods that cause it. My triglycerides were also high. (maybe genetic condition?) My Doctor put me on Zetia (generic ezetimibe) and it is working. Bloodwork shows within normal range now.

I fought high triglycerides for years. Diets, medications, exercise. Got me no where. My heart doctor then recommended taking over the counter Niacin (low dose to start). My triglycerides dropped to normal!!!

Of course watch what you eat. But another great way to help yourself is exercise. This does not mean life weights. Just get up and out and walk for at least 30 minutes a day. This along with your atorvastatin (I have taken 80mg of it for years), will help. Another thing that helped me was to watch my protein intake. It is now so much that the reduced protein intake helps tremendously, but if you watch your foods, those that are lower in protein are usually lower in cholesterol. Especially swear off baked goods (pies, cakes, muffins, etc.).

My cholesterol count is always in the mid 9's at gfr 48. I don't take any real precautions and no medication . Been like this for 30 years. Some live with high cholesterol and other live with low cholesterol levels.

I was poked and prodded some years ago by a specialist who told me he could not find any evidence of restrictions to the blood vessels. I have never been a big fatty food eater and generally eat a CKD friendly diet. In my 40's I tried to get a perfect 10 reading in order to be fully funded for medication. Never managed to budge the readings any with lots of nasty foods. The lowest I have ever been is 6.4 by medication, felt like crap and stopped the medication. I no longer worry about it and get on with living.

People with chronic kidney disease have accelerated heart disease. Heart disease is the highest cause of death in people with kidney issues. I would aggressively start treating your heart disease and kidney disease. There is a good book on Amazon called "stopping kidney disease" written by Lee Hull. It's a good book on coping with kidney disease and heart disease.
