Is the keto diet suitable for someone with CKD stage 3b? I need to lose weight
Hi Granbo, I would suggest speaking to your renal doctors before going ahead with any kind of diet. Just to be on the safe side!
Hi Granbo,
I too recommend you visit a renal dietician before you take on any diet. Keto is a fad. It recommends high fat which is terrible in any diet. The thing about "dieting" is you need to change a lifestyle, not radical change your eating habits for a month or so. Our bodies have set points, which is where it is most comfortable weight wise. It may be more than what the insurance companies have set as guidelines for weight. When people diet, they often go past their set point and what happens is they rebound and actually put on more weight. This happens so often when people use a special diet such as keto, WW or all the rest. It is big business. Most are set up for failure. Dieting creates a yo yo affect. It messes with your metabolism.
So if you decide to try to lose weight, think of it as a lifestyle change, and not a transient period of time when you will go back to the habits that are unhealthy.
Following a "renal or a kidney friendly diet" is a lifestyle change. There are major modifications necessary such as lean meats, low protein, low salt and in some case low potassium and phosphorous and more whole foods and veggies. But this is not a diet that you eat for three months and then go back to eating steak.
Just another thought, many of us lost weight when we switched over to eating like this. I lost 38 pounds and have kept it off for the most part..... the holidays are hard because I like to bake and I make candy. But I know what I can eat and stick to it as best as I can. But I know I will put on some and then take it off again. But I look at how many holidays I may have left and make it my choice to enjoy sensibly.

I agree with everyone else, plus if you are diabetic being in ketosis can be incredibly dangerous. You can eat lower carbs without high protein high fat diet. Because you already have CKD you need to be extra careful about getting all the nutrients your body needs without getting too much. Sometimes a number on the scale is not as important as preserving kidney function.
No
Check with your doctors first. I’m on keto. Lost 30 pounds in 2 1/2 months. At start I was pre dietetic, hypertensive and have stage 3 kidney disease. I am no longer prediebetic, my blood pressure is within normal range and my kidney function is stable. (Only one kidney) Do your research, ask your doctor and make an informed decision about your options.
