HI Sunshine,
I use less insulin, Lantus long acting, now. But it is due to change in diet and the fact I have lost 40 pounds. I am stage 4. My glucose is well controlled now and I am actually taking less and less as the weight has come off.
Sad thing about insulin, the more you use the more weight you will gain. Frustrating.
Hi Bassetmommer . Thankyou for replying I know that losing weight lowers Insulin requirements but I have only lost 9 lbs in the last 8wks since being told Gfr 39 Creatinine 114 and small amount of albuminuria.I also have wellcontrolled hypertension BP usually around 130/64 occasionally spiking at 140/70. I am 81yrs old my daily medication is a Humulin M3 30/70 Insulin 18 units am and pm (6 Weeks ago it was 28 units),Lisinopril 20 mgs Amlodipine 10 mgs, Dispersible Aspirin 75 mgs and Atorvastatin 40mgs. I have been given no advice apart from keep hydrated. I have increased my water intake, drastically reduced salt intake and take as much exercise as I can I try to walk a mile every morning or do 30 minutes on my exercise bike as well as doing housework and gardening . So maybe this is reducing my Insulin requirements. Difficult to know what to eat. By the way I feel quite well
Hello Sunshine! Yes when your kidney function declines the duration of action or the time the insulin works extends. So you may need to decrease the amount of insulin to avoid getting frequent bouts of low blood sugar. Talk with your diabetes doctor about this so your insulin dosages can be adjusted based on this. Wishing you all the best!
