Hello everyone. In March, I discovered that I have a GFR of 53. My GP seems relatively unconcerned. I'm wondering if I need to see a Nephrologist. I see from cruising this site and the web generally a lot of concern about diet. Many people are promoting a almost exclusive vegetarian regime, but some are concerned that an over reliance on vegetables will result in hyperkalemia. However, I have encountered studies using almost strictly vegetarian diets for CKD patients without encountering serious elevation of serum potassium levels such as this one: cjasn.asnjournals.org/conte..... Would welcome any comments on vegetarian diets and hypercalemia or whether I should consult a Nephrologist.

Hello RonaldoResuelto!!
My husband is also in the same condition..
His latest GRF is 53.. we are doing our best to improve his grf and in three months we see a very positive results
His kidney function improved by 6 points and creatinine dropped 3 points by the grace of God. We are also stick in a very healthy diet mostly vegetarian and he takes chicken , fish 2 to 3 times in a week.
Taking fresh fruit juices, salads and 30 minutes exercise at least 5 times in a week.
Medication is very important especially if u have hypertension and diabetes.
His CKd is due to his hypertension.
If ur potassium is high then u should avoid certain foods eg, potatoes, tomatoes etc. No fizzy drinks .
Hopefully ur Gfr will improve.
U are doing something good by consuming more veggies and in a right track.
Best of luck ..
Good bye..
Hi Fatiooi, Thanks for your reply. Hopefully, my progress will be similar to your husbands. I'm finding out that, though serious, it isn't as bad as I had imagined. I was concerned about my GP's lack of concern. She didn't actually tell me about the CKD. I looked at my blood tests on LabCorp's portal. Did your husband consult a nephrologist?
Yes!! My husband's nephrologist is very supportive.. you should definitely consult a nephrologist because they handle your situation more successfully.. it is natural to be worried and afraid but the more u research and switch to healthy lifestyle the more you feel better and definitely will improve your results.
Best wishes
Take care
Bye😊😊
53 is not too bad for turning it around some or keeping it from going down. Get referral to nephrologist and dietitian. I cut out too much protein, but my dietitian suggested nuts, hummus, etc. The cause is not mentioned, but absolutely no NSAIDS should be used anymore. Best of everything.
Hi, I’m stage 3 and have been for at least 10 years. At stage 3 I’ve been advised to eat a healthy balanced diet to avoid missing out on vital nutrients (by an NHS dietician). I’ve managed to improve my kidney function following these general guidelines. Avoid processed food, fizzy drinks, salt and too much sugar. Eat lots of whole fresh foods (including meat and veg). Moderate intake of red meat and dairy (although I don’t have any dairy as I’m intolerant), I’d also say moderate alcohol intake and, if you smoke, stop. I appreciate some people have great results going vegetarian or vegan as kidney patients but I’m continuing to eat meat with positive results. I also have problems with anaemia and vitamin B12 retention, so would worry about going vegetarian as result.
I am 77 and diagnosed 3 years ago at CKD 3b. My GP Doctor, whose specialty is Chronic Kidney Disease, prescribed a diet plan and exercise routine My progression of CKD has slowed down. There is hope, and much support and shared information on this web site.
