Hi everyone I am PKD3 and include quite a lot of semi skimmed milk in my diet and would like to know what I could use instead.
as long as your phosphate levels are ok you should be fine to carry on drinking semi skimmed milk ask your gp if your levels ok
There is evidence that milk has inflammatory effects on the bowel and stomach. You may find it better to try drinking more clear fluids ... Gentle herbal teas like camomile and mint teas might be good. I know it's an adjustment but there isn't much goodness or calcium in skimmed milks anyway. Nut milks and soya milks can be high is phosphates and salts and potassium so better to explore alternatives in my experience xx

Hi derby24 - certainly rice or oat milk could replace skimmed milk. Although skimmed milk is a good source of calcium,other things such as beans, lentils and broccoli are also good sources. It's not recommended to take extra calcium in CKD. This is because of the complicated connection between the parathyroid gland (produces parathyroid hormone) and calcium and phosphates. There is a lot of new thinking about diets for CKD which is suggesting vegetarian use of pulses and lentils as a protein source are good. They are high in phosphates but the phosphates are bound to a substance in plants which make it harder to release them into the blood stream. As someone else mentioned, you do have to know if you control potassium levels OK because all these things are high in potassium also. It's all a bit of maze with catch 22 at every corner! It's worth looking up latest thinking/research because things are changing all the time.

Be just as well changing your recipes to start removing dairy from meals in your diet , fresh easy cook meals like stir fry's or stews and the likes would be good . to start , \just remember if doing stir fry to blanch your veg first for 10 minutes .
What everyone here has told you is good advice; I am fighting this "minefield" of Protein intake at the moment. one habit I have got into is to have porridge oats (original, not "easy make" - which has sugar and no doubt other additives); I use a quarter skimmed milk /three quarters water (much less skimmed milk unless I am feeling particularly "bolshie" at the time, and have one of my little rather stupid tantrums tantrums when I say "Oh, to hell with it, I'll have half and half!!" I have that for breakfast and often supper. Apparently, porridge is ideal - lowers cholesterol and - as I know - isn't "bad " for you in any way.

gives you a few good ideas (not just food related). I have been told that cabbage, broccoli, garlic, Pulses (as others here have already quoted are all good).
As someone else has mentioned, you may try herbal tea (camomile, peppermint) - at least you don't need milk in those - unless you try ordinary tea (which isn't too bad when black!)

Goats milk.. Lower in phos and easier to digest.. Also rice, or some soy milks. Available in most good supermarkets these days..
And very yummy..
Cheap supermarket cows juice, err I mean , milk is sometimes up to 90 percent less nutritions than a carton of real fresh milk.. Just a little titbit of information
Also check with dietician, of course.
