Is it common to get UTI's with early stages of CKD?

Had a recent urine test and have now been prescribed Trimethoprim from my GP. Has anyone else experienced frequent UTI's. Thanks.

Hi Tannels

I frequently get UTIs. I am at stage 3a CKD GFR 40. I am at the moment having a really bad one and was passing blood, the pain was awful. My GP prescribed Trimethropin and I'm feeling much better. However my GP is refering me back to Addenbrooks.

I sometimes get microscopic blood in the urine with a UTI, but this time it was visible blood.

When I was diagnosed with CKD my report said that " if there was frequent blood or protein in the urine then I should be refered back to the hospital"

Something else for me to worry about.!!

Hi Bowler, thanks for your reply. I was only diagnosed a few months ago early stage 1-2. But I don't know how long the problem had existed. It was by accident that the problem showed up with my GP. I don't know what to expect really with it all. I did not even realise that I had a UTI, again picked up through a recent urine test. I have protein and was told kidneys functioning at 75%. I do hope you get on ok, it is a worry for you. Tannels

Hi Tannels

I feel that you no need to worry with a GFR of 75. and like I said cysts on the kidneys are common.

I have been at stage 3 for several years, but wasn't refered to the hospital until I asked to be refered. My then GP [ whos now retired ] said that " it's not usual to refer a patient to a Urologist until they are at stage 4 or 5" yet I was having blood and protein.!!!

However I eventually had an ultrasound of the kidneys and that's how they found the cysts, they also found I had one kidney smaller than the other.

If you go onto the " NKF" site there is a lot of info on there.

All the best

Hi, I was a victim of recurring UTI's during early stages of CKD. Unfortunately they're a hindrance! You need to drink plenty of fluids and keep the bladder and kidneys flushed through and any signs of UTI's must be treated as they can lower kidney function over time.

I was pretty much Queen of UTI's. I had one nearly every couple of months. The doctors put me on Trimethoprim every day for about 10 years to try and keep the UTI's at bay and then I switched to Cefelexin after my body stopped responding to Trimethoprim. In the end, I had my right kidney removed as it wouldn't respond to any antibiotics and I was still getting recurring UTI's. Once my right kidney was removed I've rarely had a UTI since. However, removing that kidney took a chunk of my kidney function with it and at that point I was at 30% kidney function with my one kidney.

Hi Tess, to be honest, I did not realise I had a problem. Although I did feel tired and was going to the loo more than usual. My GP arranged a blood fasting test because of the tiredness and feeling run down. When the results cam back, I was asked to go the see my GP and then she told me I had CKD. I now have anemia and have been on iron tablets for the last two months. I hope this helps.

If you're already on constant antibiotics and suffering from recurring UTI's and your kidney function has decreased you could already have CKD. I don't think i was ever told distinctively that "Oh now you have CKD..." the constant infections and UTI's can lower your kidney function and CKD is pretty much this. It goes through stages as the kidney function decreases. During the end stages of CKD your kidney function drops with UTI's and kidney infections, at least mine did anyway. I was stage 4 CKD for quite a while and then my function dropped from 23% to 13% very quickly and I didn't have any UTI's or kidney infections during that time. It came as quite a shock to me to be honest and the symptoms didn't really seem to relate to kidneys (gout, muscular cramps, tiredness etc) so I had no idea until I got my bloods checked. You must attend regular appointments with your doctor and keep an eye on your kidney function, diet and control of UTI's. This is the best way to keep control of the situation.
