When you have extremely poor kidney function you do become breathless.
Kidneys play some part in regulating BP and if that is shot to pieces it has effects on oxygen supply. At least thats my take on it.
If they can stabilise your kidney function (or possibly improve it - yes it is sometimes possible), it may make the whole breathing thing easier.
Have they told you why your kidneys are failing? If they can control that at all, other issues may also be controllable.
