I can't help much, but I can sympathise. I have the same problem. Some nights it goes on for a couple of hours before I can get to sleep. I also have it in the evenings, when I'm sitting.

Someone on here suggested having a glass of tonic water (containing quinine) at bedtime. It might have helped a bit at first, but the effect seemed to wane.

I've tried walking lots in the day, but this doesn't seem to have much effect either.

I find the only thing to do if it's really bad at night, is to get up and potter around downstairs for a bit, then try going back to bed again. I'm so tired though, only getting about 5 hours sleep a night.

Get a prescription for Ropinirol - it's helped me tremendously.

I use tonic water when I get it , be warned though if your on dialysis don't get quinine tablets from the dr and carry on taking tonic water , A friend did this and it ended up dropping his heart rate to around 45 so ended up on the ward for 3 days till they could flush it out his system .

Hi all, I'm a kidney patient too, had left one removed and only 25% working on remaining kidney earlier this year, apart from that luckily am not too bad, fingers crossed. Re. query about restless leg,I have never had it myself but hubby does suffer from it, we read an article which said to eat a banana a day, which he now does and it really seems to have worked wonders, now he has nothing wrong with his kidneys, and I have not been put onto a special diet like I know some kidney patients have to stick too, so whether you can eat them I don't know, but if you can it's an easy thing to try, I hope it works for you too.

Hi Boycie, I have suffered with RLS for years. It has in the past 18 months become horrendous which has resulted in me visiting my GP. Just kicking my legs about while sitting no longer helped. i had to walk about but generally leant on the back of the armchair and walk on the spot. I was put on Ropinirole 0.25mg 3at night. This was reasonably effective for a few months but I still had restless legs which I was able to sit but I had the kick my feet/legs. It's effectiveness was short lived. The Ropinirole was increased to 0.50mg, 1 in the a.m. 1 afternoon and 2 evening. I now get what I call Fed up Legs early afternoon basically when I start to feel tired which is most of the time as I am lucky if I get 3 or 4 hours sleep each night. The new dose did help for a while but I am now at the stage where the intensity at night is awful, so much so that I have cried as I am walking around the room or on the spot with being totally exhausted. It would be worth you asking your GP for medication for a short period of time just to get some sleep. The Ropinirole may work well for you. I wish you well x

There's a pill you can get called Ropinirol (in Canada) that's used for restless leg syndrome - here we have to pay for it ourselves , but well worth it. It's also used for parkinson's disease. Best of luck, I know it's really hard to take when the legs start twitching etc. - so uncomfortable -can't sleep. These helped me.

I've read all the other answers and I don't think I saw anyone mention Magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium supplementation can be very helpful (and somtimes completely heal) restless leg syndrome.

Here's my article about it, I think you'll find it helpful:
