For work I need to read an academic text book and I am really struggling. I’ve always been slow at reading but can normally digest the information this time it seems harder i haven’t had to read at this level for a few years so it could jsut be I am out of practice. Do you have any tips or tricks that work for you?

Digesting difficult texts is not an easy job for anyone and requires time and effort. It's good that you read slowly because going fast or skimming won't help you digest it.
Here are some tips that might help:
Take it slowly and break it up into bite size pieces.
One chapter could have lots of subheadings and so you have to thoroughly work on each section before moving on and have a break before moving on.
Take notes, underline the important bits or draw a Mind Map for each section so you give yourself a good chance of digesting what you are reading.
Have a dictionary handy to look up words that you are not really sure about.
Do some reading each day – don't try to do hours at a time. A little often is much better.
Speak it out loud in your own words, so you are sure that you have really understood what you've read. This helps with confidence that you have understood it and will highlight what you have still to work on.
Try to get the book on kindle because of it's very handy instant dictionary and note-taking facilities, dyslexic friendly font etc etc.
I get books that easy to read and have larger print . Sometime you can buy or get book from library are dyslexia friendly having Colour front at beginning of text .
Also I do is read few sentences and then write about it what can remember it does help. Also use over lays or can download them through library can read them on line does help cause can increase font hope this helps
I recently tried an amazon kindle fire book you can use it with an underline going underneath each paragraph, also you can make the screen larger blow the font up and pictures.
I use a 3x5 note card for reading most paper text books, but I find my amazon kindle to be really wonderful I would recommend one. I have a Kindle fire Hd with retina display it is designed with dyslexics in mind you can change the color of the text size and blow up images.
I like using highlighters. Maybe putting a transparent like colored plastic sheet over the writing. Make sure the type is legible look for the main points for some reason I like academic books but then it’s all about the subject.
