Amputation procedures

Hi! I have seen many diabetic patients amputated when they get an injury on their legs. What is the fact behind this? Is there no other way to be done to avoid this procedure?

If you keep blood sugars under control you should be able to avoid many of the complications associated with diabetes. Yes that includes amputation after some form of injury but also visual impairment.

This is why taking care with what eaten and looking after yourself is SO important!

this article covers the higher risk factors relating to conditions that will necessitate amputations - a mix of poor circulation leading to arterial disease, and nerve damage that means people aren't aware/don't feel the damage in the same way

smoking increases the risks

regular foot care and proper footwear will help to reduce the risks.

keeping blood sugar levels properly controlled will help with preventing/slowing the progress of arterial and nerve damage
