I'm sad to say that on the 26th of Jan I had a small stroke & ended up being admitted to hospital, but came home yesterday

It has left me with alot of weakness in my right leg & my right arm is now slightly weaker than before, but my speech is fine

Don't despair you will improve the more you try to, I've had 3 strokes and no one would know. My speech has never been affected either thankfully.

Sorry this happened ive also had three subsequent strokes. Remember you can and will get through this. I also walk and have become stronger. You must keep reminding yourself to practice, practice practice anything you are having difficulty with. My mantra is your mind believes what you tell it- tell it good positive things... “ i can do this, i will do this, what must i do to accomplish this” and keep at it. You will prevail. My thoughts are with you, if you need questions answered or want to talk please feel free to PM me. All the best, Cindy

Another thought- you are being anticoagulated?

in reply to Wittycjt

Yes I am, Aspirin for 2 wks & then back onto the bloodthinners

I also suffer from other health problems that aren't helping & making things that little more difficult, but I'm gonna get there eventually

I had a massive stroke 18 months ago. Thankfully hubby was home and dealt with it promptly, so I was thrombolysed. I made a remarkable recovery, with only mild weakness in left hand and foot, which no one notices. It has left me with memory issues, which is frustrating, but I appreciate I am very fortunate. I was 52 when it happened. I found doing swimming in warm water helpful in my recovery. You will get here, as long as you continue with a positive mindset. Take care 🤗

I was thrombolysed as well, it worked fine on my right arm & hand, but not so well on my leg. I have memory troubles as well, I also suffered 2 minor strokes last yr which left me with slight speech problems from the 1st & hand problems from the 2nd which are slightly worse

I have to walk with a stick, can't turn over in my sleep, suffer from really bad tiredness, which was bad after my 2nd minor, but am glad to be still here as believe that the power of the cross saved me as it happened in church & in front of the cross

I am positive & am willing to accept that I won't be 100% right, but wanna be the best I can, it's gonna be a long journey as fighting other health problems as well

I too have other health issues I have an inflammatory arthritis which affects my spine, ribs, pelvis as well as hands and feet. My tendons and ligaments are calcifying causing stiffness and pain.

I also produce no cortisol and have Adrenal Insufficiency, which can quickly lead me into a crisis. I have to carry an emergency injection at all times, as both good or bad stress can have me spiralling downhill.

I remain a positive person also, and grateful to be given another chance. Hope you continue to recover well 🤗

Sorry to hear that, I suffer from various heart & mental health, asthma, epilepsy, IBS, balance problems & tinnitus

It feels like the Physio team are pushing me to do things that I ain't ready for as trying to sort out on going health problems & wanna work on keeping the grip in my hand rather than walking without a stick, but they wanna do the latter

Occupational therapy issued ne with some foam of varying firmness, and lots of exercises of the fingers and grip which I found very useful. Since retiring I don’t write much, and find if I don’t practice frequently my strength weakens quickly. My writing post stroke is very different to that before stroke, it quickly looks like a child’s scrawl.

Physio are probably focusing on the latter on their visits, as the grip ones you can do unsupervised throughout the day. They say the first 12 weeks after stroke is when most recovery occurs, so I’m sure that’s why their focusing on your walking. Persevere, you will get there. 🤗

in reply to Runrig01

Thanks, it's just so hard sometimes as I get so tired for days afterwards. I do exercises to increase what they call my pincer grip & gonna give me some handwriting ones as well

This may sound weird, but when I had my stroke & was in hospital, it bought my husband & my family closer together, but now it feels like a curse as my family ain't supporting him

Sorry to hear your family are not supporting your husband. Maybe time for a frank discussion with them. Do they live with you, or live away. My daughter lives 250 mile away, and came rushing back when I had my stroke. Life has returned to near normal now, but when she’s home she helps around the house so much, and cooks dinner, she used to be a chef. I appreciate her help at these times, but also understand it’s difficult to get home often. Sending gentle hugs 🤗

in reply to Runrig01

They live nearby, but I've tried to have a good talk with them & it ain't getting anywhere except making me unhappy. They came rushing when I had my stroke & was in hospital, but backed off now

Sorry to hear this. Would they perhaps listen more to your hubby?

in reply to Runrig01

No they don't as they think what they think is best for me. Our friends are not wanting to know us either apart from a few, so we're having to cope mainly by ourselves

Sorry to hear that. Give yourselves some TLC 🤗

I guess it's in times like these that you find out who your true friends are

Having to get other health problems & benefits sorted out ain't helping either

Regarding friends, you’re absolutely right. My partner (and love of my life) was always the spark of the party, witty, creative, active, hardworking, multilingual, cultured, well travelled, very sociable and eloquent, independent, driven, generous and caring , thus had many ‘friends’. Then in 2014 she had a massive stroke, lost her speech, right side hemiplegia, wheelchair bound, cannot fend for herself and is totally dependent on me and carers. As we are both elderly it’s been an uphill fight. And the friends ? Disappeared, save a couple of exceptions. “A friend in need , is a friend indeed” as the saying goes. So, as you wrote, “you find out who your true friends are”.

That just makes my heart ache, hearing your story. I just joined this group today, because my stepmom had a stroke a week ago. It’s going to be a long road to recovery. Hang in there❤️

Thank you for writing. I’m sure that with your help your stepmom will recover. Wishing you both the very best. If I can be of any help, I’ll be happy to try, just let me know.

We certainly found out the true side of someone who we thought was a good friend, now we have nothing to do with her as things turned really nasty, this may sound odd, but it seems like another friend is slowly coming back to us because of this

As for my family, they mean well, but they have to accept that they can't wrap me up in cotton woll because of these as yes I'm @ high risk of having another, but I need to live my life not in fear of this fact, yes I've had 2 seizures in a wk, not good as that's how it went on the last 2 times & I carried on having them & ended up having a minor stroke 1st & the stroke on the 2nd time, but I can't live in fear of it, my husband knows what to do should the worst happen again & hopefully it won't as each time they are getting a tad worse

I'm so sorry to read about what happened to both of you, I can only imagine how awful it must have been & lonely, but like we said true friends rally round in times of need, so glad that you still have a couple

My husband & I have our faith, that has helped us through it so far & will do, I was even able to have holy communion & prayers whilst in hospital

Things ain't going as good as we were hoping as I am suffering from mega bad tiredness & now have to use a walker for my bad days, but we still hold strong in our faith

You will get through this. Dont lose hope, even during the bad times.

in reply to Emmanuel_009

We won't despite the fact that it just seems like 1 thing after another now as I'm stopping breathing every few days both day & night, that's very scary for both of us!

1 good thing is that I've finally got PIP & that's gonna help us both alot as my husband has gone for Carer's Allowance, just gotta wait for face to face appointments to restart so I can hopefully have my long awaited Universal Credit assessment
