Hi there - I am 78 years old and have only half of one kidney (the left one). In 1988 I became ill and an ultra-sound scan found that I had only 1 kidney and that there was a major blockage. I was admitted to Vancouver General Hospital and for 2 weeks they did cat-scans and aspirated fluid from a sac next to my bladder - about 10 cc and I never did learn what it was. I went back every month for 2 months and had a stent put in and checked. Didn't work and surgery to remove the blockage was done on the 3rd of January/89. Blessed to be Canadian and operated on by one of Canada's top urologists! I am still doing ok but I know dialysis is down the line for me and only for a short time; but, hey, no complaints. I've been living on gravy for 28 years. Thought I'd check in to see what other people have experienced and to find out more about dialysis.

Hello Lucky Duck! You are doing quite well NOT to be on dialysis still at 78!!! In general terms, peritoneal dialysis is always the best option if you want to preserve your own kidney function for as long as possible It is the most gentle method. But it is a real nuisance as you do it in your own home and are responsible for your treatment. All the best Jennie
