Fistula : Hi everyone. I had a fistula... - Dialysis Support
Fistula
When I had one done they said that could get swelling due to the bruising that could occur and told me to take paracetamol for the pain. If you are worried about it speak to dialysis nurses or even get in touch with the clinic at the hospital whom performed the operation and speak to them. It may not help the initial pain but advice from an expert can be re-assuring and help you to stop stressing about it.
It sounds like you should contact either the access nurse or the ward you were in when they did the surgery. There should be some pain for a couple of days but not severe. Always better safe than sorry.
Any surgery will be painful as the anaesthetic wears off, but it will pass. I had mine done two months ago and was told to do the following exercise to help with the swelling. Try touching your thumb with each of your fingers. If you can't do this especially your first (index) finger then report it to the renal team. If your concerned about anything talk to your renal team that's what's they are there for.
I had the second part of an two operation BVT fistula about 6 weeks ago and I still have some swelling and a little pain.
Both have been gradually improving, but it has been a slow process.
The main thing to look for is any sign of infection, which will be accompanied by redness, tenderness and an increase in temperature.
If you are concerned, you should see our GP or chat to your renal team.
