Dear Sandy

Thanks for your response... My comment on Metformin as follows.

(1) Metformin is a 60 years old work horse for type 2 diabetes and is perhaps is the only drug known not to cause any serious side effect in the long run...

(2) A lot of research is still going on to find/ identify it's benefits other than Diabetes.

(3) It appears as an essential drug list of world health organisation...(WHO)

(4) As a single drug , it is given as first line treatment for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes / Pre-diabetes, after Diet and Exercise fail to control type 2 diabetes.

(5) It is an insulin sensitiser. It does not whip Pancreas....

(6) It is also widely prescribed for non- diabetes women who are diagnosed with PCOS ( Polycystic ovary syndrome)

(7) It is especially recommended for obese type 2, since it has a weight reducing properties...

(8) In some parts of the world , even non-diabetes Obese are prescribed to reduce weight....

(9) One of the known long term side effect is B12 depletion which can be corrected by B12 pills.

(10) At high doses more than 2000 GM's per day can cause Acidocis ....

(11) It may not be a suitable drug for thin type 2 (BMI less than 20) .... Since it will make him still thinner..

(12) It would work only if the pancreas produces some insulin ... It is not for type 1 .....

Type 2 since 2000 and been taking Diamicron-80 twice daily and maintaining the sugar level below 130. A few months back I happened to be in a situation where I could not continue my LCHF dietary pattern for about a months’ time and my sugar level goes on increasing.

I changed to Metformin [without consulting my doctor whom I meet once in 4 months] too but it remains high!

I will be meeting my doctor soon. Before that I would like to know the reason for my systems unresponsiveness to either of these two drugs?

Metformin is an insulin sensitiser meaning it helps effective utilisation of Available insulin in the blood and corrects IR ( Insulin Resistance)...

But if insulin produced by Pancreas is very low /inadequate , then Metformin only would not be effective ...

Diamicron contains Gliclazide which acts on pancreas to produce insulin...

Normally , if one is insulin deficient , then a combo of both Gliclazide and Metformin is given...which takes care of both IR( Insulin Resistance ) and insulin deficient...

There is a caviet here that after a long period of time, when the body Insulin resistance is not controlled, Diamicron also becomes unresponsive....

Have you ever checked your Fasting blood insulin levels ???????? If you have , you may like to tell us, then we can give our views....

While you should continue with your healthy diet and post meal exercise , You must immediately consult your medical practitioner.

Please remember, diabetes life does not end here if a particular drug fails....☹️😊

Traditionally in such a situation when Gliclazide and Metformin fails, Doctor would recommend external insulin...

However today some modern dugs are already approved in many countries and if you talk to your Doctor , He may prescribe you for one or more of these latest Oral drugs :

(1) A Gliptin or DPP4 inhibitor such as Vildagliptin , Sitagliptin, Teneligliptin......

Galvus met, Janumet and many others.....

(2) Sodium Glucose cotransportes (SGLT2) inhibitor. . Such as Canagliflozin, Dapagliglozin,... there are many others.....ehich acts on kidney to filter your sugar from blood .

(3) Please remember even External insulin though little bit inconvenient for daily use , but today millions of people are also living with insulin for decades and are leading a healthy life....

(4).Today once a week non- insulin injections called GLP1 agonist is also available for type2 diabete: Liraglutide, Dulaglutide, Exenatide, Lixisenatide, and more...

Be Happy always, keep smiling ... 😊
