HbA1c: Target should be between 5.5 to 6.5%. Try to lower HbA1c level as low as possible by diet adjustment, exercise and self blood sugar monitoring on daily basis.

Your HbA1c is high.

Improving HbA1c by 1% for people with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes cut the risk of microvascular complications by 20%.

Research has also shown that people with type 2 diabetes who reduce their HbA1c by 1% are:--

19% less likely to suffer cataracts.

16% less likely to suffer heart failure.

43% less likely to suffer amputation or death due to peripheral vascular disease.

Hi Lakshmikanth,

Welcome to the group. Please tell us little more about yourself - your age, since when diabetic, your height and weight, whether on medication/ insulin?

In general, it is a good idea to have a target HbA1C similar to the non-diabetic number

( < 5.7 %). But that is easy to say and not necessarily easy to achieve depending on individual conditions. As such according to several medical regulatory bodies < 6.5 % target for diabetics has been recommended and your own medical Doctor sometimes may give you lower or higher target levels depending on various health conditions.

6.5% is a reasonable and safe target, particularly if you are on medication.Risk of hypo will increase if one targets a lesser number.

Lakshmikanth as per even prevalent standards >6.4% is diabetic and hence something you must pay attention to and consult a doctor immediately. Whether you both choose a pharma intervention, lifestyle intervention, dietary intervention or a combination of all this, is something that can be decided.

Dear Lakshmikanth - my colleagues have given reasonable analysis of your reading. You now have a marker in which to improve upon towards the next reading. It is a very reasonable start if this is your first one. Once you put your plan together on the types of food you will consume, when and add exercise wherever possible, you will want to improve your next reading with the examples given above. One, you will feel good in yourself and two sustaining healthy living will help you control your diabetes. Slow, methodical and measured education and determination will aid in your quality of life. Best wishes to you and stay optimistic!
