Hi I have diabetes and currently have diabetic neuropathy. I am taking one pill each of Neurobion and Mecomin (500 mcg), each two times a day, but it it does not seem to be effective in giving a permanent stop to the pain and tingling effects at the base of my feet. What do you think I should do? Thanks

Change the diet that has got you enslaved to those pills.

Your story, brief though it is is a microcosm of the woes of the bewildered. If pills were the answer you would be ok now. You are not.

Change your diet!

Hi indiacratus, I was afflicted with diabetic neuropathy only about a couple of weeks ago and am trying to understand what hit me and to understand more about this condition. Hence I am still picking up on information to help me develop my diabetes management plan.

I would like to thank you for the useful information you provided from the mayo clinic

article which gives me a better idea of what I should do.

I am also woried about hurting my foot (affected by nerve pain and numbness) around the house which might lead to more serious consequences. If you have practical information on this subject I would appreciate it.

Try Gabapax NT.

Can find Gabapax NT. Do you mean Gabapentin instead or is there a more mainstream name?

My doctor prescribed Tetrafol Plus for this problem.Result is very positive and fast.Daily one tablet at bedtime .Now doctor has advised me to take it once in 2 days after normality returned in a matter of 2 month.

Clarify with your physician.

Good luck.

Reduce sugar

Thanks. I have done that already in my meals (small portions and brown rice, and more veges) and drinks (only plain water) and no other indulgence.

you must understand that the neurologacal pain is due to demyelination of nerves due to uncontrolled sugar. And since sensory nerves are myelinated, the pain.

Take lots of vit b12 : 1500µg par day. Can take twice a day. Sublingual preparations are better.

Also take ala 600 mg with biotin 2.5 -5 mg.

Thank you Surano, I am looking into getting hold of Vit B12 for sublingual use to increase absorption into body.

I have one fundamental question: can the nerve degeneration process from diabetic neuropathy be stopped altogether from appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes? Has it occurred before? Am looking for a ray of hope.

you can stop further damage only if you control your D well. Meds will help only then. You can't reverse the damage.

Thanks for the encouraging news that "you can stop further damage only if you control your D well". I generally understand what needs to be done to keep better control over Diebetes. However would be good to hear from others how exactly they did this and won with specific actions, so that I can develop my own program based on actual experiences of other and from my doctor's advice.

Just to give more of my background. I am 66 years and had pre-diabetes for about 20 years or so and started taking metformin for about about 15 years and managing to keep my A1c blood sugar around 6 level as a result. Also kept my blood pressure close to 120/80 level. However I suddenly got hit by neuropathy about a month ago although it is likely I had been moving into this direction for some time before I realised it. So I guess the main thing for me to do now is to keep even tighter control of my blood sugar and weight (am not over weight) through diet and to exercise as my main weapons while keeping with the metformin. Any other suggestions are most welcome

do take doctor's advice but keep in mind there are two types of treatments.

1) symptomatic that will relieve only symptoms like gabapantene for pain

2) therapeutic or curative. This will address to the basic problem and remove the pathology.

Hi Suramo, unfortunately a few doctors that I visited told me that diabetic neuropathy has no known cure once it hits you and that I have to learn to live with the condition which is expected to be progressive. They only prescribed Neurobion (a combination of three Vitamin Bs) to help me manage the pain and to slow the degeneration of the nerves. They refused to offer me gabapantene explaining that it serves as a pain killer and eventually will cause me to feel very drowsy and disorientated. I felt rather doomed.

However you said in your advise that there is such thing as a therapeutic or curative stage to address the basic problem and to remove the pathology. This is hopeful news despite what my doctors say. I would be most grateful if you can provide me the guidance on how to go about this route of recovery. Do help me. Thanks

Hi rafiqzaidi, is it really that you managed to SOLVE your diabetic neuropathy condition using Aldonil and keeping your blood sugar under tight control? Or is it some other condition? Appreciate further news/experience from you.
