All cells in the body need glucose for conversion to energy so that body functions may be carried on a constant basis. But in case of diabetics, there is a shortage of insulin or the body has developed insulin resistance.Insulin acts as a key to open individual cells so that glucose can enter and get converted to energy. This does not happen in diabetics. So much so,the capillaries i.e small, minute blood vessels that carry the blood to the extreme portions of the body may get damaged for want of glucose energy. When the capillaries die,the nerve cells also get damaged. This is particularly noticeable in the feet(neuropathy),eyes (retinopathy) and kidneys(nephropathy) and most other organs.Remedy is to reduce the sugar levels by vigorous exercise and active lifestyle, diet control, medication and stress free life style. You can also get medicines prescribed by the physician.I am also on such medication.

* Blood cholesterol should maintained in normal level. LDL level should be <100 mg/dL, HDL >40 mg/dL and triglyceride <150 mg/dL. If one can not control high blood cholesterol, he should take statin to control the same.

* Exercise (brisk walking) daily for about 30 minutes to improve blood circulation.

* Stop smoking to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

* Adopt heart healthy diet. Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet, which includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish, vegetables, poultry, and egg whites. Use monounsaturated oils such as olive, peanut, and canola oils or polyunsaturated oils such as corn, safflower, soy, sunflower, cottonseed, and soybean oils. Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
