My late (and unlamented ) husband was a drunk, hugely obese and violent Type 2.
He is no longer alive due to his own actions.
My son, now 33, has been showing signs of diabetes for some time, but due to the situation where we live, haven't been able to get an appointment with our GP since we moved in 3 years ago! It's the only Surgery in Town!
He started to have visual disturbances in his dominant eye, and being an avid maker of Models of all kinds, panicked. The thought of possibly losing his sight really triggered him, so I got him an Optician's appointment.
He opted for the new thing being offered, an in depth scan of the eyes, which showed the anomalies, and the optician referred him to the hospital. After two visits within a week, we were told it was micro aneurisms in the eye and this reinforced my push for a GP appointment for blood tests for blood sugars.
Still Can't get an appointment! Not for Love, Money or the Old Medic's Network (Retired Nurse!). Will need to call the hospital and go back there again! It's costing my friend, (who drives us) a bloody fortune! She won't take payment either!
Sorry for the rant so far.
I understand that management of Type 2 has changed a lot in the last 30+ years, so I'm looking for meal suggestions, etc. for management. He's not fussy about food, so hopefully this won't be too bad.
Cheers, Midori

Whilst I can't offer much in the way of advice as I was just recently diagnosed with T2 myself and have been waiting for an appointment with a diabetes nurse for 8 weeks with no advice on diet. I am trying a high fibre low carbohydrate diet as the body loves to turn carbohydrates into glucose.
The best I can suggest is trying to acquire a finger prick testing kit and monitor from a pharmacy. I don't believe you need a prescription for those. That would at least give you some peace of mind whilst waiting for an appointment or evidence to take to the hospital/surgery showing a need for an appointment.
The main reason for responding to your request for assistance however was to wish you both the best of luck in getting the support that you need. Is there anywhere that you can complain about the lack of support that you are receiving at the surgery?
I hope that you manage to get this resolved sooner rather than later.
Went back to the optician, they checked him and found more, and a couple were actively bleeding. They sent an emeil to my Surgery saying this man needs blood tests Urgently. this was Friday afternoon. My son rang the surgery on the monday as the optician directed, and they said they hadn't reveived it, So my son rang the Optician and I think they gave the GP surgery a rocket. His appointment is Tuesday 17th.
