Hi I have just had dbs surgery at hope hospital in salford {on monday} Its amazing i feel great ;having the stimulator turned on on the 15th march and feel very confidant that it will be ok . Perhaps not the answer you wanted but felt i needed to talk about it
Thanks for replying. Can I ask if you were awake at any time during the op? Are you back on meds until March?

There is a company called Medtronic that actually develop the DBS. They have a free DVD about actual patients talk about the procedure and their experience, excellent DVD to listen to. Their website is medtronicdbs.com or their phone is 877-438-3574 maybe you can request a a copy of the DVD. Goodluck !!
hi no I was asleep during the whole 12 hour operation .The consultant who did it thinks being awake is too stressful. I believe he is the best surgeon in the uk . yes i am on medication but had to cut down. I was taking 5 madapor 12;5 a day I now so faw am taking two a dayand stalevo 125 6 times a day now taking 5 a day. had to reduce meds because of discarnesia wheh i am turned on i will probably will be off most of meds .
Hi,my husband had his DBS done in 2004 at Newcastle General ,he was awake for the op but we have been told that there is no need for the patient to be awake .My husband had everything done in 1 day, from the electrodes fitted to the devise in his chest and being switched on.He went from taking 20 tablets a day down to 6.Having DBS does not cut out all meds but it does cut them right down.
He was dyskinesic 24/7 and when he was switched on there was no sign of the dyskinesia. Now almost 9 years on he is on 10 meds a day for PD and he says he would go through it all again as it is such a big help.If he hadn't had it done he would be in a whellchair and unable to do anything for himself(his words not mine).
I know that Newcastle is the only hospital in the UK that does it all in one day.It is now done at the R.V.I.(Royal Victoria Infirmary). His surgeon was Mr Jenkins and his neurologist was Professor Burns.
He visits the Parkinsons specialist nurse about every 6 months for a check up and he hashad 2 battery changes since having it fitted and this is done under a local anaesthetic and you are out the same day.
Hope this has been of some help.
Being asleep would that be the Clearpoint Surgery? My understanding is you are awake for the regular DBS surgery and asleep for the Clearpoint surgery. I have been approved for DBS surgery, but trying to find a hospital closer than San Francisco that does the Clearpoint Surgery. (I am in the LA area.)
sorry you arw wrong I had everything fitted in one day last monday . although i am not yet turned on
Glad to know he has been so good for a long time
