Alzheimer's research got a boost Tuesday after the federal government announced new funding and support to combat the disease.

Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that the new National Alzheimer's Plan would seek to find effective treatment for the illness by 2025.

MedPade Today reported that the 2012 budget contained about $500 million toward with the disease with Obama administration earmarking about $100 million in the 2013 budget.

The bulk of the money will go toward clinical research with the rest toward awareness campaigns and to caregivers.

The federal government said that a website would be launched on Tuesday for sufferers and their families to find out treatment options and other information.

"These actions are the cornerstones of an historic effort to fight Alzheimer's disease," said US Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at a meeting of Alzheimer's researchers, reported the Associated Press.

Anthony this doesnt convince me Parkinsons is pushed to the side. Research in Alzheimers is likely to benefit us too and it is the most common neurological condition.

If you compare the number of people with Parkinson's vs those with Alzheimer's, the senile dementia of Alzheimer's affects more people. Of course, some Parkies get Alzheimers and it can be misdiagnosed as Parkinsonian Dementia. I really don't know, but I'll bet the treatment of Parkinsonian Dementia is like that of Alzheimer's

NO. MIchael J Fox's Foundation is quite strong and very dedicated. THey are on the move and have no intention of giving up. Also they often mention that if during their research they find a cure for another neurological disease they will access the information to that area of research. SO it seems we are all in a good position. GOOD NEWS!

At Gainesville Florida, they are not putting parkinson's to the side. They are all dedicated to treatment and medication options.Their research is ongoing. My better half had DBS surgery in 2010, He is currently waiting for a date for the Fast Track to see if he will qualify for getting the other side done. He has the best doctors we could hope for. The hospital staffing are excellent.
