The announcement this week that the federal government is changing its policy on the use of human fetal tissue in medical research is designed to please anti-abortion groups that have strongly supported President Donald Trump.
But it could jeopardize promising medical research and set back attempts to make inroads in devastating diseases such as HIV, Parkinson’s and diabetes, U.S. scientists said
PDConscience , I respectyour comment. However, I had dug this news deeper before posting.
The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), the largest professional organization of stem cell researchers from around the world, opposes the new U.S. Health and Human Services policy to eliminate federal funding for fetal tissue research in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural research program. This research has long been viewed as good public policy to improve human health and has proceeded with public support.
ISSCR President Doug Melton released the following statement:
“These new restrictions have no scientific or ethical basis and will roll back decades of consensus in the U.S., delaying the development of new medical treatments. The regulatory and legal framework in the U.S. for overseeing fetal tissue research was carefully developed with input from the public, ethicists, policymakers, and scientists, and ensures rigorous oversight, including that the tissue is obtained legally and with donor consent.
“Research using fetal tissue has saved millions of lives through the development of vaccines for diseases that once ravaged communities across the world. Polio is now almost eradicated, and rubella, measles, chickenpox, and rabies are all preventable diseases because of fetal tissue research.

“With these new arbitrary restrictions on research, the United States is ceding its role as the global leader in the development of cellular therapies and regenerative medicine. Americans will now wait for life-saving therapies to be developed in Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.”
No, the ISSCR report is both more reliable and more complete. The new restrictions pertain primarily to federally-funded research which essentially forces participation (through taxation) of people ethically opposed. Existing grants and privately funded research will continued unscathed.
""The new restrictions pertain primarily to federally-funded research which essentially forces participation (through taxation) of people ethically opposed.

Therefore, do you also agree that we shouldn't be a "participation (through taxation) of people ethically opposed" to war therefore outlawing the murdering of people for political purposes and defunding our military???
Do you also agree that I/we shouldn’t be a "participation (through taxation) of people ethically opposed" to the tax substizes that religious organizations receive therefore forcing all taxpayers to subsidize religion??
Ask yourself, do you refuse any and all vaccines, drugs, and medication that used fetal tissue in its development so be administered to yourself, your children, your grandchildren??
Your “Moral” values stop when it forces undue pain, suffering, and possibly death on a member of MY FAMILY!!!
I’m afraid you’re getting a tad melodramatic, Grouch. I’m assuming you’re equipped with an example of how my ‘moral values’ force “undue pain, suffering, and possibly death” on a member of “MY [your]FAMILY!!!”(?).
Please explain how this fetal tissue is going to be harvested, conditions, mothers to be consent, etc. Don't quite understand the process of harvesting fetal tissue. . . Thank you.
Strict federal rules govern the collection and use of human fetal tissue. It’s against the law for anyone to accept payment for human fetal tissue, except for reasonable amounts associated with acquisition, storage or other costs. There are also provisions that require women who are donating fetal tissue for research to provide informed consent and prohibit physicians from altering the timing or method of an abortion in order to obtain fetal tissue.
It is obtained from both induced and spontaneous abortions. And has been for a long time. This is from Bloomberg’s:
“Fetal-tissue research sounds cutting-edge, but in fact the U.S. government has been funding it since the 1950s. The 1954 Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded for such research; it helped lay the groundwork for mass polio vaccination. Vaccines for chicken pox, hepatitis A, rabies, rubella and shingles were also developed using fetal-tissue research. It’s no exaggeration to say hundreds of millions of people have benefited from vaccines derived from fetal tissue.”
