Sudden worsening in leg weakness and shuffling

My hwp (diagnosed 6 year) has experienced worsening leg weakness in the last 2 days. He is on Sinemet 100/25 (IR) 4 times per day - no overnight slow release Sinemet. Could the leg weakness be caused by not enough sinemet? ( He also suffers from constipation, and I was reading that this can interfere with the absorbsion of the levadopa?) Advice welcomed! Thanks

All of this is typical of PD. I have experienced similar symptoms and the Sinemet ER works well overnight. But it's good to take the regular Sinemet as soon as one wakes up. Constipation is a ongoing struggle. Try whatever works and stick with it .

I find a combination of 3-4 prunes and a stool softener every other day helps. God be with you and comfort you as you take care of your husband.

Hi Rather, Thank you very much for your reply and advice. I think the Sinemet ER will be a good choice at this point - and I will be adding the prunes to my husband's breakfast! I find this forum so helpful and caring - a real community!

Constipation is certainly a problem with Parkinson's. My husband was advised to take a glass of fresh orange juice, with bits, first thing in the morning as the vit C helps with absorption of Sinemet. It helped greatly with Constipation as well. He also has Laxido and Dulcoease to use if necessary.

Thank you, Jalia - I'm going to add the fresh orange juice - good to know it helps not only with constipation - but also with absorption of sinemet - I had no idea! Thanks!

It's best not to add orange juice but rather a fresh orange for the fiber. Also the full fruit makes for a lesser spike in glucose.

make sure you do a lot of walking so gravity helps it out. Also have every second day meat and dairy free and eat beans, lentils, raw cabbage coleslaw and it helps it through

Thank you, LAJ - he eats very little meat or dairy. The walking for him is very difficult just now.

Would like to help but need more info. Does he have tremors? What are his other symptoms? How long ago was he diagnosed? How old is he? Have you investigated DBS?

Hi Gallowglass; he is 80, and his tremors are quite well-controlled with the sinemet. He was diagnosed 6 years ago. Have not looked into DBS yet, but will do. Thanks.

There are age limits for DBS> Different hospitals have different limits. Before you expend a lot of effort, check with your neuro or directly with neurosurgery departments.

Sudden onset unsteadiness is a sign with my husband that he has a urine infection. He never has a raised temperature or burning sensations, but possibly worth checking if his urine is cloudy.

Hi CRMACK, Thanks for your reply - that is interesting - we will check out the urine infection possibility!

I have found that a pair of orange and black Temu sole Massaging slippers for under ten bucks have completely transformed my shuffling into normal walking
