I can't find where a low carb or high carb diet is defined for this study, but in general I'd say that carbs proteins and fat are all needed. Avoid high fructose corn sweetener and sugar. Avoid seed oils and fried foods. eat lots of good meat, greens. organic whole grains, veggies, and fruits

I agree in principle

So... I am not a big fan of science and my mind was warped as a child when I read the great book "How to Lie with Statistics". I have also experienced 60 years of "best medical advice" changing dramatically and have not recovered emotionally from "science" coming out and saying Pluto was no longer a planet.

So... the article says this: “Our study highlights an unfavourable association between low carbohydrate diets and total and cause-specific death, based on individual data and pooled results of previous studies. The findings suggest that low carbohydrate diets are unsafe and should not be recommended.”

Being petty, I am focusing on "The findings suggest", and further on the word "suggest": cause one to think that (something) exists or is the case, "finds of lead coffins suggested a cemetery north of the river".

But the the title of the article is a certainty: "Low carbohydrate diets are unsafe and should be avoided".

"Are" is the plural of "to be". "To be" is a verb form that expresses existence, identity, or state, while "suggest" is a verb that means to propose or recommend an idea or action.

"Are" is certainty. Suggest is possibilities.

And then you have the question of "which carbs"? "How many carbs"?

The article is information, but for me it is far from instruction.

PS: I eat a fairly low carb gluten and lectin free diet plus about 8 cans of Pepsi with real sugar a day and a container of Breyer's ice cream with real sugar about every 10 days. I am kind of fringe.

8 cans of Pepsi?!? Oh Bolt I didn’t know it was that bad! When you said had Pepsi, I was thinking like 1 or 2. Goodness - you do so many good things, how did this happen??? How can we help?

Thank you for the offer. Short of kidnapping me and locking me in a cell, no there is not much you all can do.

I have served in two branches of the service, lived in cities and worked on farms, stood in the Sahara Desert, ridden a motorcycle coast to coast and back, studied Christian religions, Eastern religions, Theosophy, and philosophy, and the one true thing I have found is that I really really like Pepsi (with real sugar).

"...have not recovered emotionally from "science" coming out and saying Pluto was no longer a planet."

That made me laugh.

I could be stating the obvious here (I only skim-read the article) but could it be that a lot of people who turn to keto diets do so because of adverse health events (e.g. heart attacks)?

Lots of people who have resorted to keto may have done so in later life due to a diagnosis of underlying health conditions so the damage may have already been done through years of unhealthy choices (high carb diets, excess alcohol, smoking). This would make them more likely to die early due to irreversible weakened/damaged organs over many years.

I feel well on a keto diet as do friends and family who have adopted it as a way of life.

I find the idea that people on keto lose weight, feel and look healthy, and have lots of energy quite reassuring. If it was going to kill you, surely there would be some signs that it was negatively impacting on health beforehand. The fact that it can reverse type 2 diabetes is in itself quite telling.

Great point! People with health issues are more likely to try non mainstream diets!

there are probably some threads on this forum about dr matthew phillips who is an expert on PD and cancer and how Keto helps or maybe I heard him on an episode of "no silver bullet" last year.

Have seen. I am a fan of LCHF / Keto. I just posted the press release as it contradicted general popular opinion about LCHF

Remember I said visceral fat

Visceral fat is generally considered harmful:

* Excessive visceral fat increases the risk of serious health conditions, such as:

* Heart disease

* Type 2 diabetes

* Certain cancers

* Therefore, having high levels of visceral fat is never deemed "good".

In essence, while a small amount of subcutaneous belly fat is normal, visceral belly fat poses significant health risks.

For PwP, the effect of keto on PD seems to me to be the most important. This is the latest study (2024) I could find: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Conclusion: We conclude that an LCHF intervention is safe, feasible, and potentially effective in mitigating the symptoms of this disorder. However, more extensive randomized controlled studies are needed to create generalizable recommendations.

Here I share my insights and experiences: youtube.com/watch?v=W7kT4Oo.... This presentation is in Dutch but you can use subtitles and then you can translate.

Total garbage science. We better tell all the people who cured their diabetes and epilepsy with a keto diet that they should start eating sugar right away

Seems tied to diet & culture in Poland.

I agree with all the comments that this is horrible science. The author wrote that they think the mechanisms for the negative effects of low carb diets are related to high intake of red and processed meats and low intake of vegetables and fiber on low carb diets. I follow a ketogenic diet and eat very little red or processed meat and lots of vegetables ( and a fiber supplement twice a day). And its easy to envision someone on a high carb diet eating lots of red and processed meats and very little high fiber foods. Basically its possible to have a great low carb diet or a crappy one, and the same holds for high carb, vegan, etc. I agree with the theory that many people turning to low carb diets already have health issues and that's why they tend to have worse outcomes.

' It consists of questionnaires administered in the home, followed by a standardized physical examination in a specially equipped mobile examination Page 1Page 2 [ Series 2, No. 161 center (MEC). The examination includes physical measurements such as blood pressure, a dental examination, and the collection of blood and urine specimens for laboratory testing. '

It is based on a questionary??? there is no difference in those questionarys between processed and unprocessed meat. They do not ask if there is citric acid or sulfite or glucose in the meat. Those components are important to know. Because those components bring disharmonie in the gut. And that can give heartproblems and so on. Also lots of people on lowcarbs diets eat a lot of oxalate rich foods. Like nuts and leafy greens. Those oxalates can also burden the gut. Not the unprocessed meat. Who ever try's to eat low carb should slowely wean on to low oxalates and then to unprocessed meats and fish. And one should work to restore the gallbladder. Most people there gallbladder is blocked because of eating to low fat for long team. First this problem has to be fixed to go higher in fats.
