Happy New Year friends!
Perhaps ‘neurogenesis’ (the process by which new neurons are created in the brain) should be the word of the year for 2025 🙂
Passing along something I came across in Dr Mark Mattson’s (intermittent fasting Guru and was chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute of Aging, US) work:
“There are stem cells in the hippocampus that divide and can stop dividing and form new neurons in response to exercise… Studies have shown that intermittent fasting also increases the number of newly generated neurons that survive and integrate into the dentate gyrus neuronal circuits. Although the mechanisms by which intermittent fasting and exercise stimulate neurogenesis are not fully understood, evidence from several laboratories suggests an important role for BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor).”
