DBS and EMP

Since EMPs (electromagnetic pulse) can disrupt electronics, does anyone know if an (EMP) can potentially fry the electrical components present in my DPS apparatus? Sources of of EMPs include Nuclear explosions or massive solar flares. I guess my potentially fried brain is the least of my problems; if exposed to EMF produced by a nuclear device.

As you say, if you are close enough to a nuclear explosion to worry about the EMP the radiation and blast would get you anyway. Massive solar flares happen anyway and the magnetosphere prevents most of it from reaching the Earth, so unless you are going into space you should be safe. I suggest that you do not climb Mount Everest or fly a high altitude spy plane whilst a solar flare is in progress. You could wrap youself in metallic foil and then ground the foil then you would be safer. M

Thanks for your reply, Mr. Motorman. I had planned on climbing Mt. Everest and flying a high altitude spy plane, but thanks to your advice, I will refrain!

Stay out of the Bermuda Triangle. Just in case. Sell your MRI machine on eBay.

I’ve thought about this , and the more likely issue of a prolonged lack of electrical power. We could purchase a Faraday shielded bag and store a back up unit in it, and then after the event find a surgeon who could install it? I actually do have a solar generator stored on a faraday cage so I can recharge my unit for a while … I wonder..,meanwhile we could continue to build up a stock of CL and just go back to that if event occurs.

As you probably know, exposure to an EMF considerably less than being nuked can potentially disrupt the operation of a DBS rig, eg MRI--and settings must be altered (no big deal) and exposure limited. It may not only affect the neuro-transmitter but also the embedded wires and leads and consequently your body.

When we were recently considering a purchase of a hybrid car, we called the DBS manufacturer (Medtronic) and asked about exposure to EMF from the hybrid's electric motors and batteries. They were very non-commtital about what could be the issues but did say to limit time near electric motors and batteries (which, of course, is pretty much half the car). We bought a gas car just to be safe. Please post if you find more definitive info re EMF--short of being nuked.

I was also in the market for an EV and asked my neurologist if sitting on a large battery would cause any problems with my DBS. She said she has not seen any evidence that it would effect the DBS (which means she doesn't know). I went and bought an EV and had no issues with DBS, but there were issues with driving the EV. I kept slinging my wife around while driving it, so I traded it in for a combustion engine car. No...I did not trade my wife.
