Cigarette smoking: an underused tool in high-performance endurance training - pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl...

Abstract

The review paper is a staple of medical literature and, when well executed by an expert in the field, can provide a summary of literature that generates useful recommendations and new conceptualizations of a topic. However, if research results are selectively chosen, a review has the potential to create a convincing argument for a faulty hypothesis. Improper correlation or extrapolation of data can result in dangerously flawed conclusions. The following paper seeks to illustrate this point, using existing research to argue the hypothesis that cigarette smoking enhances endurance performance and should be incorporated into high-level training programs.

I love it. Have been arguing on this sort of principle for years.

I recommend something else which is more in line with tongue and cheek but gives you the same idea, which is an extremely good idea. It is called the Journal of Irreproducible Results.

"Nicotine is the addictive phytochemical in tobacco, which is derived from plants in the Nicotiana species of the Solanaceae family. Other species in this family include Capsicum and Solanum, whose edible fruits and tubers include peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants. All contain nicotine. The amount of nicotine absorbed from these foods is negligible relative to the amount obtained from active smoking, and probably lower than that from environmental tobacco smoke.11 However, even nicotine blood levels reached from environmental tobacco smoke exposure, much lower than that from active smoking, are sufficient to saturate a substantial portion of α4β2 nicotine receptors in the human brain.12 Stimulation of nicotine receptors protects dopaminergic neurons in animal models of PD using 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)13 or rotenone.14 Therefore, given the strength of the association we recently observed between PD and environmental tobacco smoke, which was similar to that for active smoking,2 we investigated whether nicotine from dietary sources might also demonstrate an inverse association with PD in the same case-control study population."

My husband with Parkinson's and I have always been non-smokers however we did have some exposure to second hand smoke at work.

I'm sorry. This post was not really about Nicotine, but about how easy it is the write a paper that makes a ridiculous conclusion. I shared it as a warning for people basing decisions on research papers.

Sorry if I confused anybody. This post was not really about Nicotine, but about how easy it is the write a paper that makes a ridiculous conclusion. I shared it as a warning for people basing decisions on research papers.

I realized that was your point- I was just wondering if eating the potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants could have some benefit. I was thinking that the Mediterranean diet is often suggested as being a good thing.

It is about knowing what to look for. In the case of Parkinson's animal studies, it is whether the animal actually developed Parkinson's prior to treatment. For details see:

Our renowned Johan Cruyff even smoked in the locker room.! This highlights the conclusion of this fascinating study: one can reach great heights in sports while being a heavy smoker. Unfortunately, he did not live to a ripe old age and tragically succumbed to lung cancer… But, of course, that wasn't part of the study 😉.
