Last May, my husband and I visited Dr. L Mischley's office in Seattle. I suspected my husband had very early stage of PD. I wanted to "catch it early" and response with slowing the progression if possible. We had seen several professionals in the Boise area, but none could diagnose him with PD, they just said come back in a year. So after 3 years we went to Seattle.
This video was taken in the reception area. She asked us just to sit and not have eye contact or give the dog any prompts. She filmed Coco. One of the questions I had asked her in an introductory email sent before our appointment, was if PD could be passed person to person. At the very end of the video she says "your negative", she is speaking to me. The dog, Coco has obvious tagged Terry immediately . The video is only 27 seconds. I tried to turn so it was easier to view, but to no avail. Special thanks to Park Bear who told me how to post this since I had tried several times and failed.
Thank you I think I followed your instructions correctly then added anyone with link access. But since it was me who posted I still don't know if others can view the video.
Well I believe the dog to be accurate. Plus I am not sure what type of video you are suggesting. In a video you might see my husbands posture, but not his REM sleep or his sense of smell.
The old "head in the sand" method of staving off neurodegeneration, eh Bolt? 😝
Just teasing of course, I know very well the lengths to which you're going to avoid PD. And I know the knowledge you've gathered and generously shared here is greatly appreciated.
I'd jump at the chance to get my spouse with RBD "sniffed," although I know in my heart what the result would be. I'm pretty sure I detect the musky smell that is said to accompany PD, so if Coco didn't, I'd be elated!
Well, I think Coco goes to the office a lot, and anticipates a reward when finished. But by her actions I suspect she could smell Terry from Dr.’s room. I must add Coco is a very well behaved young lady. She slept in consultation room in her bed for 2 plus hours while we met with Dr. My husband loves dogs. It was one of the reasons he agreed to travel all the way to Seattle. After all we had been to 5 other Drs. who couldn’t give an opinion. Let the dog speak.
Wow. The way Coco made a beeline to Terry and planted herself in front of him, just like drug-sniffing dogs do, was amazing!
I hope the fact that your local docs couldn't confirm your husband's DX for 3 years, means his progression has been (and will continue to be) very very slow. Everyone talks about how important early diagnosis and interventions are, but Dr. Mischley seems to be one of an excruciatingly small number of doctors "walking the walk." Glad you were able to see her and thanks for sharing your experience and that cool video.
Well Rufus Terry was doing really well, until we got COVID - he is now taking C/L and dealing with bouts of rigidity. It has mostly gone except for in his right hand. But he is faithful to Dr. LM's diet, exercises, and takes supplements so we are hopeful for a full recover. thank you for your kind words.
