Researchers in Korea have developed an at-home exercise program to help patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease improve their motor function and reduce depression.
The National Institute of Health of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said Tuesday that the safety and suitability of the program was proven through its clinical research, in which more than 80 percent of the participants completed more than half of the program.
Why can’t someone in the English speaking world develop something like this. I have MAMIL friends with static bikes and screens that enable them to race around Innsbruck (other locations are available) racing against thousands of other people from all around the world. Surely someone could come up with a fun, well thought out exercise program to encourage people with Parkinson’s to move more??!
Have you not heard about Rock Steady Boxing? It started 18 yrs ago and I’ve been exercising with them for 18 yrs. They are strictly for Parkinson’s patients and its non contact. There are 181 affiliates in 15 or 16 countries. 🥊
If you click on the left hand side of the google address bar it has the option to translate to English. You can then read some English headings etc and I watched some of the exercise videos to see how to do the exercises. Watch them on double speed to get an idea. I’m not sure the sound track is essential as you can watch how to do them. Unless of course she is saying whatever you do don’t do this 🤩
When I was diagnosed I was told “intensive” exercise would prevent the PD from progressing. For a year I was on a stationary bike several times a week biking with my heart rate at 90% of my max heart rate for 30 minutes. Then my back aches became more intense. I started having pins and needles in my legs and difficulty walking.
It turned out I needed a lumbar fusion. I am now recovering. But intensive exercise is not in my near future. My PD is progressing, slowly. Could I have prevented the PD from progressing? I don’t know. And I’ll never know.
