Is anyone familiar with tar dive dyskinesia (TD)I have uncontrolled movement in my tongue which is caused by anti psychotic drugs. My doctor believes that this TD will go away on its own, having stopped taking any Anti psychotic drugs. Otherwise there is a medicine I can take to control the tremors, but this medicine might cause further depression.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It's not entirely true that tardive dyskinesia always goes away on its own, it's a matter of individual circumstances with a number of factors so it is not easy to make a blanket statement. Sometimes even today it does not go entirely in some cases. That is always one of the risk factors that is important to discuss at some length between doctor and the patient, and even though the antipsychotic medication may be necessary, there can be side effects and that sort of comes with territory, like with many things many complexities are possible. But variance among individual cases and circumstances is high so prediction is not really possible without a great deal of background information.

However excessive side effects that are intolerable or significantly problematic these days as much easier to deal with because there is a larger variety of medications, much more is known, and recent medications and modifying meds are quite a dramatic step up, as a group, and there are a few now that can counter some of those side effects when they do happen and if they should become intolerable or excessive or unacceptable.

But you have really not said a lot so it's hard to respond with any kind of clarity. A very great deal of background is necessary if you want to have more of them a tentative or trivial interaction about tardive dyskinesia, or truly, about anything.

Praying for you, your health care team, and your family/friends/caregivers, that all will receive grace from God to handle this challenge well. I don’t know much about Tardive Dyskinesia, but some basic coping strategies may help. Have you had physical therapy or voice therapy? Do you have a general medical doctor who can help you work through this? Do you have a caregiver? Are you able to do exercise like Rock Steady Boxing? )This program is just for people with PD. It’s helpful to be with others who understand and to learn new skills.). Do you have a friend who likes to do internet research who might be helpful in finding support groups, doctors, etc? Just a few ideas…may God bless you, comfort you, guide you, heal you and sustain you.

You may want to look into vitamin B6 - there is lot of literature out there for B6 and tardive dyskinesia. Some in this group have posted B6 is worth taking despite reducing efficacy of Carbidopa/Levodopa.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Personally I have been using Ashwagandha for 4 years for my dyskinesia in the leg/arm due to mucuna pruriens (natural form of levodopa without carbidopa). Found this study that it may help with Tardive Dyskinesia as well. I used to take B6 but not anymore but continuing with Ashwagandha.

Blessings.

For people taking carbidopa levodopa, vitamin B6 supplementation is essential. It does not interfere if it is taken at a different time than the medication:

Which medication are you taking? I have experienced what looked like TD before, but never connected it to anything specific.

Not currently taking any medication for Parkinsonism. Was taking carbodopa levadopa until neurologist determined I didn’t have Parkinson’s, but had Parkinsonism.

had Parkinson’s symptoms in 2017, but my Parkinsonism has not progressed since then.

Some supplements you can discuss with your doctor for TD to see if they may be beneficial for you :

Quercetin

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/126....

A relevant quote :

' The results of the present study clearly indicate that quercetin has a protective role against haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia. Consequently, the use of quercetin as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia should be considered. '

Melatonin

wjgnet.com/2220-3206/full/v...

A relevant quote :

' Adjunctive melatonin therapy has some positive outcomes for sleep, metabolic profile and tardive dyskinesia in patients with schizophrenia. No beneficial effect of melatonin was observed on outcomes of cognition or benzodiazepine discontinuation. Future studies utilizing larger samples and investigations specifically comparing the effect of melatonin as adjunctive therapy with different antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia are required.'

Vitamin E

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/350...

A relevant quote :

' After vitamin E treatment, a decrease of 2.36 (95% CI = -3.27 to -1.45; P < 0.00001) in the AIMS was observed in the treatment group, compared with the control group. Vitamin E may offer a new avenue treatment for tardive dyskinesia. '

Ginkgo Biloba Extract (GBE) is thought to have a similar effect as vitamin E for TD.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/194....

A relevant quote :

' ALA improved TD and catalepsy by decreasing HAL-induced LP. ALA and its metabolite dihydro lipoic acid protect against HAL-induced TD and catalepsy by scavenging reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species. '

Antioxidant combinations are generally thought to have synergy overtime (months). The above four are a fairly potent antioxidant combination while having multiple other health effects.
