Role of Luteolin in overcoming Parkinson's disease 2021 sci-hub.ru/10.1002/biof.1706

"The incidence of life threating neurodegenerative diseases such as PD is increasing day by day. Sporadic as well as genetic causes are well documented. Due to the decline in the dopaminergic neurons, the management for the advanced stages of PD becomes cumbersome.

Most of the treatments are symptomatic and are associated with several side effects. In this context, the naturally occurring agents among which the flavonoids can play an important role. Flavonoids are present ubiquitously in a wide range of fruits and vegetables.

Luteolin is one of the flavonoids that can cross BBB and exert its neuroprotective effects. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nature of the luteolin has been well document in various in vitro and in vivo studies.

Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are involved in the progression of many neurodegenerative diseases including PD; hence, the protective role of luteolin against PD symptoms has paved a way for the search of phytotherapeutic agent. Luteolin not only reduced the oxidative stress/neuroinflammation but also prevents apoptosis and enhanced neuronal growth via modulating signaling pathways. Several docking studies have revealed that it inhibits the aggregation of alpha synuclein, thus inhibiting the process of LBs formation that could prevent the loss of dopaminergic neurons. This could delay the onset of late PD symptoms."

This is just an abstract, but it is new and is what triggered me to post: Luteolin: Nature's promising warrior against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/380...

"Neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) are defined as the slow loss of a group of neurons that are particularly sensitive. Due to the intricate pathophysiological processes underlying neurodegeneration, no cure exists for these conditions despite the extensive research and advances in our knowledge of the onset and course of NDs. Hence, there is a medical need for the creation of a novel therapeutic approach for NDs. By focusing on numerous signaling pathways, some natural substances derived from medicinal herbs and foods have demonstrated potent activity in treating various NDs. In this context, flavonoids have recently attracted increased popularity and research attention because of their alleged beneficial effects on health. By acting as antioxidant substances, nutritional supplements made up of flavonoids have been found to lessen the extent of NDs like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Luteolin is a flavone that possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As a consequence, luteolin has emerged as an option for treatment with therapeutic effects on many brain disorders. More research has focused on luteolin's diverse biological targets as well as diverse signaling pathways, implying its potential medicinal properties in several NDs. This review emphasizes the possible use of luteolin as a drug of choice for the treatment as well as the management of AD and PD. In addition, this review recommends that further research should be carried out on luteolin as a potential treatment for AD and PD alongside a focus on mechanisms and clinical studies."

Vegetables and fruits such as celery, parsley, broccoli, onion leaves, carrots, peppers, cabbages, apple skins, and chrysanthemum flowers are luteolin rich. Again and again, these kinds of studies point in the direction of the MIND or Mediterranean diet. That can never be replaced by all those different jars of supplements....
