I just started doing Rock Steady Boxing a few months ago. It is great for balance and creating energy, however afterwards I have significantly more tremor for a few hours or so. I am tremor dominant on my left side but each time I box, my right hand quivers a bit afterwards. Now I am wondering if the impact of boxing is Causing my tremor to spread to the other side? Any guidance or advice would be appreciated.
Question on Rock Steady Boxing: I just... - Cure Parkinson's
Question on Rock Steady Boxing
The tremor will likely spread to your other hand eventually whether or not you are in Rock Steady, so it is not likely causing it to spread. It is not uncommon for weight training (and exercise) to temporarily exacerbate tremors.
People with Parkinson's may notice that some symptoms such as tremor increase during exercise, but this doesn't mean tremor will worsen over the long run. I think the boxing seems to increase my symptoms temporarily as it includes the cognitive component.
Essential tremor typically occurs on both sides of the body.. Various tremor types (rest, postural, kinetic and intention) may be seen in both essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, with time, the two diseases may coexist within a single patient:
Hi Ron. Have you ever tried to do FAST WALKING? It is different to any other exercise and is very good for PD. Most people think that all exercise does the same for us, but they do NOT
I love Rock Steady Boxing for its overall health benefits, improvements in gait and stability and the mental lift. but my Parkinson’s is getting worse. I was told it will get worse anyway. So at least I will go down fighting!
Don't worry, when you progress in what you are doing, the tremor will decrease dramatically..
Yes, this is exactly what I am saying. When you master the specific movements which are new for your body and mind you steadily become a bit more stronger, stable and flexible. As a result our muscles kind of relax and rigidity and tremor diminish.. You'll see, just do not rush give it a time..
I attend Rock Steady Boxing at Hartford Health in Mystic, Ct. Two weeks ago I strained my back while taking a shower. So I didn't go to Boxing that week. No problems today so I'll go back to Hartford Health tomorrow, I don't know what I did in the shower to damage my back. I ordered suction cups to treat myself if boxing aggravates it. My wife added a seat for the shower.
I know I sound like an old pest but, FAST WALKING,FOR ONE HOUR, THREE TIMES A WEEK HAS HELPED MANY PEOPLE.
I have had PD for over 31 years now and at 89 I am still walking and in good shape!
Give it a try!
Thank you John for being an inspiration and always encouraging people. I have been fast walking for about 8 weeks.
I am doing a short workout Tuesday and Thursday in between with weights.
I'm not noticing reduction in tremors yet but my walking pace and gait is very good!
Hmmmm, yesterday I had Rock Steady Boxing at Hartford Health. Near the end of class they rolled out pads for planks, situps., etc. While laying on my back I couldn't roll over to stand. I laid there like a turtle on his back til one of the other members noticed my floundering and leant a hand. It was most embarrassing.
