My husband is pretty disabled, so we bought a rehab treadmill. This has parallel bars on both sides that he can grip while he walks. It also starts and increases in speed at a very slow pace (increments of 1 mile per hour) and has very large simple to press buttons.

Not sure what stage your husband is in or if he can use something more “normal”.

He uses it with his physical therapist for additional safety.

Ours is called the Exerpeutic TF2000 Recovery Fitness Treadmill. But I’m not sure if you can still get this.

Thank you for replying. Husband not advanced as your husband but needs to keep moving. He can't walk very far and with his rather nasty fall whilst doing so a few days ago we think that maybe a treadmill could be a safer option.

Then I highly recommend it! It also helps the gait. The one we have is only for walking so if he wants to jog or run, choose one for that.

Jogging/running definitely not ! This could be the one or something very similar.

It may be a good idea to have him try different types of machines (elliptical trainers, stationary bike, treadmills, recumbent bikes) in a gym for a few weeks to be sure which one he prefers. The best exercise is one in which he will keep doing regularly.

Thank you cgreg. Yes, I'm intending to make contact with a personal trainer to look into treadmills. We have a stationary bike but it is rarely used (!)

My husband - HWP - cannot use a treadmill. Once it starts going his body tends to pull away and he'll fall. Instead, we use a recumbent bike - exercise for him is better when he's seated. The bike also has arm pulleys and can fold up and be put in closet, light enough to move from one area to another. Purchased from QVC/HSN.

We also have a floor bike pedal exerciser a/k/a under desk pedal exerciser and run around $40-50.

That's very interesting Linda. Thank you. I am concerned about the falling aspect as it starts up. He obviously must try it out first.

Yes, try before you make the investment. HWP is going to Rehab to retrain brain on walking up steps. This is a rehab place for PWP and we watched someone using the treadmill assisted by a Parkinson's trained physical therapist. The PWP had a gait belt on and the PT person was holding the gait belt. Treadmill was going very slow. Not for my hubby at this point.

Good luck.

I notice that you are in the USA. I don't currently hear anything like this in the UK but I suppose there will be if I delve deep enough!
