keto diet ?

My husband who has parkinson's is on a keto diet at present. The issue is that he is losing weight and he is skinny as it is! He is not experiencing hunger , he is also doing intermittent fasting: eating supper at 6 pm and then eating the next day at noon and and supper. Any advice ? Any input on how long before the weight might settle AND how long before real results as to improvement can be expected? Many thanks to all!

If he's on keto and intermittent fasting, he will not accumulate fat. That being said, he still may feel better because of the AUTOPHAGY, which is the body turning on the garbage disposal and breaking down the offending bad proteins that clog up and harm the sensitive and delicate dopaminergic cells. So I would say, dont worry about weight and numbers like that if he is feeling better. If it becomes a problem, I would say drop the keto diet before you stop the intermittent fasting. From what I learned about this subject, the autophagy happens while youre sleeping, so the more time between when you eat and when you sleep, the better. If you have a 6 hour window where youre eating , or rather when he is eating, make it breakfast and lunch, and make dinner the meal that he skips. Good luck!

I want to add that a good thing to introduce to his diet is WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE, the stuff that weight lifters drink. This will prevent muscle wasting, help with recovery after exercise, and, as a special bonus, the amino acid CYSTEIN he will be getting from this is a precursor to Glutathione, the "master antioxidant", and that helps clean up on a cellular level as well. Not only that, but Whey Protein Isolate also has amino acids that are precursors for Dopamine production, such as Tyrosine. I use Muscle Feast and Promix brands myself, these are from grass fed cows and very high quality.

Thanks so much for taking the time! Will get whey protein isolate and see how we go.

Whey protein is quite inflammatory. Pure pea protein or hemp protein is much better.

I also read a study that whey protein contains GMP which reduces Desulfovibrio in the gut ….which was recently implicated as cause of Parkinsons.

Which one was implicated in parkinson's, you mentioned two things without saying which one. Sorry I've been ill for a while and I just don't have it in me to go reading a journal article unless the only thing available is the abstract. Thanks.

There are no downsides or trade-offs to whey protein isolate? Nature's perfect food?

It does contain all 9 essential amino acids. It works for me, that's all I know

He's not having enough calories. Can he eat more fats? If he's having 2000 calories a day, he needs around 165 grams of fat at the higher end. He can eat things like nuts and seeds, olive or avocado oil, cheese ( if having dairy), avocados, olives, fat bombs for dessert and snacks and oily fish. Melting butter on his vegetables, adding cream to his coffee or soup, and using a little extra cooking oil are all good ways to increase the calorie count of his meals. Maybe cut down on the fasting time to include another meal.

Yes this is the way to do keto!

I have been on Keto for 6 yrs and lost a lot of weight, my advice is , as someone else suggested , add another meal, eat a bit more food. that should balance it out

wow! 6 years! way to go! I've been on the O.M.A.D. (one meal a day with all calories eaten within a 2 hour window) for 447 consecutive days. I love it! Lost a lot of weight and with the 22 hours of fasting... I know I'm boosting autophagy and helping to slow down my symptoms.

tough to answer, I went on the diet at the beginning, only had tremors, still do. nothing much else, bit stiff sometimes. Is it the diet, the supplements, the exorcise.. Will never know

The keto diet can only be useful for a few weeks, then can become unhealthy.

It is better to broaden his food intake by changing to a "modified paleo" food choice - lots of vegetables, some fruit, lean meat. chicken and oily fish, eggs, legumes. But eliminate animal dairy (except butter and ghee), grains like wheat, barley, oats, rye, rice, corn, and all refined sugar.

Lots of buckwheat cooked in bone broth, or quinoa and snack on nuts and seeds. Use good fats like coconut oil, olive oil, etc. Buckwheat and quinoa (which are seeds) provide protein as well as carbs.

Intermittent fasting is good.

Most PwP lose size (fat) and become quite lean for a while, but put on muscle as they become more active and participate in exercise.

Most of us should be lighter than we were when diagnosed.

Lots more about food, energy, etc in "Rethinking Parkinson's Disease".

"The keto diet can only be useful for a few weeks, then can become unhealthy."

Evidence? My doctor doesn't say that. How can you?

There are many studies showing this.

Doctors may not have the latest information on nutrition as it is not part of their training.

I am also doing the exact same thing as your husband, keto+intermittent fasting+exercise. I have also lost weight, but was actually wanting to! I have lost 50+ lbs, but it's been a good thing, and my body has stabilized around 188lbs (I'm 6'4"). With that said, don't fuss too much about the weight loss, have him eat more during meals if he doesn't want to lose additional weight. I even cheat every once in a while and eat bread! 😲

You may look up the MIND diet, Laurie Mischley recommends it

Been thinking more about this and doing a little homework for you since my earlier reply. I think he need to add a breakfast. mine is berries, goat yogurt, whole avocado and sprinkling of ground flax seed.. You will find a level and after a while add a few cheats once in a while,(were only human),

Boswell says that we have a natural, fully preprogrammed jump in blood sugar at roughly sunrise which we cannot change. In order to adjust to this, she has her patients have their first meal as a breakfast and the second meal as mid-afternoon. No third meal, and because there is no third meal there is no consequence Spike and blood sugar in the evening, and that supplements autology and also reduces inflammation signals that otherwise go to your immune system. Instead of three spikes of insulin during the day, now there are only two, and a nice 15 16 hour gap for the overnight.

I would suggest checking out Dr. Mary Newport's Books that go into detail getting higher Ketone levels using Coconut oil, MCT oils and Ketone Esters while not necessarily always being in deep ketosis. She also has a free website with lots of good articles on coconutketones.com/

Thank you for the interest and the input!Much appreciated ...for now he plans to continue with the keto diet but making adjustments to add calories as some of you have advised . I have tracked down a keto friendly meal replacement that is very high in calories to supplement with and will follow up on investigating suggestions. This forum has for years been a source of information and inspiration and continues to be so

At some point in the presentation, he talks about feeding starch instead of carbs to maintain weight.

WinnieThePoo profile image

But starch is carbs? Carbohydrates are sugars and starches

MarionP profile image
MarionP in reply toWinnieThePoo

In keto land starches are better than"carbs," which is their sloppy reference to simple sugars.

Drs Mischley and Lustig are both important speakers on the subject of PD. But Lustig achieved fame by being a strong Atkins proponent, Mischley used research to show that the MIND diet was better than the Mediterranean diet and both were much better than the standard American Diet. She shows dogs can be trained to find PD. 40 or so years ago I read Lives of a Cell by Dr Lewis Thomas. He made the same point 40 or so years ago that animals can be useful for treating chronic diseases. .

Hello ~ I don’t know if this will or not. A web site that I have found helpful is DietDoctor.com. Maybe you’ve been keto long enough that you don’t need help, recipes, meal planning, etc. (Just a thought.)

Good luck with the weight of your husband.

Have a blessedly fabulous day!!
