Best Natural Treatment for Leg Pain

My husband who has recently been diagnosed with early-stage PD gets quite bad pain in one leg at night which disturbs his sleep apart from having to get up at least twice a night to go to the loo because of an enlarged prostate.

I was wondering what people here take for similar pain which I undertand is quite common with PD. He's not on any medication at the moment as he's just started a Naturopathic nutrient programme which will include a standardized macudopa shortly when it's launched.

He currently takes Ibuprofen which only takes the edge off it. He has tried Co-codamol but that of course makes his constipation worse.

Ibuprofen is an NSAID so I'd be careful about taking it for an extended period.

Yes, that's exactly why I am asking the question. I don't like him taking it at all.

Yes, caution to taking Ibuprofen for too long as can harm kidneys (happened to my hubby). For pain HWP takes CBD Oil. His preference is 1200mg and takes before bed and early in morning. Purchase from HeadandHeal.com - they provide instructions on dosage to take..

Thank you. I've just bought some CBD, CBG gel which he has not been using long enough to know if it will help or not. We' have tried various other CBD products without any effect. I will look into one from HeadandHeal.

Hope it works for you. Remember, not all products/supplements work for everyone.

If ibuprofen is helpful, a possible way to use it without the gastric issues is by making it into a liquid spray or lotion. I have done this and for me it was more effective than oral dosing because it allows higher local tissue levels than available through oral dosing, while significantly reducing systemic levels and completely avoiding the gastric issues associated with NSAID use. Very easy to make and apply for localized pain. Also faster acting than oral ibuprofen dosing. It also works with aspirin.

Art, would you please share with us the process by which you convert the tablet into a topically applied product? I much prefer to treat localized pain locally. when possible…

Julie,

I will post how I make this tomorrow as a separate post so I can access it easier for future reference.

Art! You are brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing your great wisdom. I look forward to your post on this and was wondering if one could use Naproxen or even Celbrex in this manner. Thanks again!

I put that post up yesterday as I said I would, here is a link to it :

I have made it with Naproxen and it worked very well for my friends and myself, but I have not made it with Celebrex because I didn't have any.

in my experience the only thing that really touches my leg and foot pain is Levodopa, which in my case is Madopar

I'm not sure if magnesium and a little of calcium help leg pain but it seems to help tired, discomfort leg

BonsaiKid profile image
BonsaiKid in reply to TL500

He already takes a lot of magnesium in various forms.

None of the oral forms of magnesium are as effective as topical magnesium chloride spray for relieving muscle cramping and minor pains. Oral and topical is most effective.

CBD oil and melatonin might help, but I think he’d be better off with some levadopa.

BonsaiKid profile image

He was taking melatonin but not now on his current protocol from the Naturopath. The neurologist did not want to put him on medication yet and we want to try the macudopa first.

I would definitely add a good turmeric curcumin supplement to his regime, so many benefits and many people say its as good as taking an advil. Take it with a fatty food for best absorption and when first starting it, you can take a little extra to get the blood levels up. Also, magnesium would be worth trying as well, it seems to help with my HwP nightime movements. We use Magtein, supposedly is more absorbable than some other forms. Best to you!

Thanks. He was taking curcumin and magnesium in different forms fro some time but that did not help. He is now taking Magnesium Threonate but not as Magtein.

Many times the pain is from chronically tight muscles due to Parkinson’s. If you think this is the case with your husband, let me know, and I can tell you many ways to deal with it.

BonsaiKid profile image

His muscles are definitely tight. The acupuncturist mentioned that his leg muscle was like a tight rope. I can feel his calf and back of thigh is tight when I've massaged it with magnesium oil and now the CBD and CBG gel we've got.

Hi, I also have pain in one leg which is worse at night. I get relief from an over-the-counter capsaicin based cream. The active ingredient is from hot peppers. The brand name in Canada is Zostrix. It comes in two strengths either .O25 %P/P or .075% P/P. I started with the lower strength to make sure that it did not irritate my skin. I had no problems with irritation so have increased not to the higher strength which gives better relief. It must be used regularly for best results. The usual dose is 3 to 4 times daily, but I find twice daily works for me.

BonsaiKid profile image
BonsaiKid in reply to Heintzman

Thanks, Zostrix does not appear to be available here in the UK but I can probably find something similar. He sometimes gets a burning feeling with the pain so I am concerned that capsaican might make it worse.

Heintzman profile image
Heintzman in reply to BonsaiKid

My pain is the burning type….typical of nerve pain. Capsaicum cream is intended for nerve pain or for neuropathic itching.

Heintzman profile image
Heintzman in reply to BonsaiKid

Amazon UK has Christopher's Cayenne Heat Ointment, Various Capsicum patches, Napiers Capsicum and Ginger cream, looks like the strengths of these products varies

UK brand names are Zacin 0.025% or Axsain 0.075%……check with your pharmacist as to whether a script is needed
