Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) And Potential Help

One of the main points of this post is the fact that :

' Although benign prostatic hyperplasia rarely causes symptoms before age 40, the occurrence and symptoms increase with age. Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects about 50 percent of men between the ages of 51 and 60 and up to 90 percent of men older than 80.2 . '

As quoted from here :

niddk.nih.gov/health-inform....

Those are very high percentages of BPH in men based on age, no matter how you slice it suggesting an extremely high incidence rate once you turn 51 years old.

An Anecdotal Report

A friend of mine with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), was discussing the issue with me, knowing that I have some familiarity with supplements. He told me that among his symptoms, he had the following that he could remember at the moment :

1. High urgency to urinate with the feeling that he might not make it to the bathroom in time.

2. Once in front of the toilet, a high degree of difficulty and waiting for his urine flow to start.

3. Very frequent starting and stopping while urinating which he described as "Morse code" signaling and what he described as a feeling of having not fully emptied his bladder whenever he urinated.

4. Very frequent trips to the bathroom all day and all night with small amounts of urine being discharged at each visit.

5. Getting up 3 to 5 times per night to urinate small amounts of urine even though the urge to urinate was very strong.

6. Overall a significant decline in quality of life (QOL) due to having to work his life schedule around having to urinate so frequently. Also an increased anxiety level seemed to accompany all of his BPH symptoms, in his opinion.

After hearing his description of symptoms, I was thinking to myself, how miserable it must be to live with BPH. I have seen multiple anecdotal reports on the use of Grape Seed Proanthocyanidin Extract (GSPE) as helpful for BPH, but had seen no significant studies to support the use of GSPE for BPH. I mentioned this to him and told him that GSPE has a very good safety profile as seen in human studies in case he was interested in giving it a test. He asked me if I used it, and I told him yes, but not for BPH, but rather for general health based on multiple studies I had read about it.

I told him what supplement I was using and that I was taking the label recommended dose which was a significantly higher dose than I had seen on other GSPE supplement labels. He said he was going to try it and see how it worked.

Since the bottle will last 80 days at the label recommended dose, I said that one bottle should be more than enough to find out if the GSPE was going to be helpful in reducing his symptoms or not. I told him that if he didn't get any relief with that one bottle, then it likely was not worth ordering a second bottle. He said he agreed.

I reminded him that there are multiple risk factors for BPH, so it is possible that while anecdotal reports suggest that it works for some people, it is unlikely that it will work for everyone and he said he understood, but felt that, to him, it was worth a test. So I showed him the product that I use, he took a picture of it and said he would order it that day.

I didn't see him again for about 3 months and when we met, he said he had good news and proceeded to tell me about his experience after starting the GSPE at the label recommended dose of 3 capsules each day ( 1200 mg /day ). He said that within the first month he noticed that he didn't have to go to the bathroom as often and the urgency of having to urinate had declined very noticeably. He went on to say that in that first month most of his symptoms had noticeably declined gradually, but he said within the second month all of his BPH symptoms that he was aware of were simply gone and that the BPH seemed to be in a type of remission!

He said he planned to continue taking it because of the other health benefits I had mentioned about it as well as the fact that GSPE seemed to be holding the BPH in check.

I told him that I was very happy for him and he thanked me for recommending it. I mentioned to him that there are also studies suggesting that GSPE has potential anti-prostate cancer effects and while BPH does not lead to prostate cancer, that BPH can lead to other urinary and bladder issues, kidney infection and kidney failure, so since GSPE is working well to control his BPH, it is good that he will continue using it indefinitely.

This is the product that I use and he ordered to good effect :

amazon.com/Carlyle-Grape-Ex...

Although this remedy was effective for my friend with BPH, it is important to note that he had an actual diagnosis of BPH, because prostate cancer can have similar symptoms to BPH and although GSPE has shown potential to act as a prostate cancer preventative in studies, GSPE is not a treatment for prostate cancer and so it is clear that an actual diagnosis is of the utmost importance so precious time is not wasted in treatment of actual prostate cancer as opposed to BPH.

Lastly, I don't know if this will work for everyone and this is just an anecdotal report from my friend for whom GSPE alleviated his BPH symptoms within two months, or less than one bottle of the supplement he used.

Thank you Arte, important information. Just days ago I was diagnosed with BPH, moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia. The product are you using is grape seed extract and does not appear to be available in Europe. I wonder if Resveratrol could be equally effective against BPH, a polyphenolic compound identified in red wine, a powerful anti-inflammatory that inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells. All the best

I didn't know that GSPE could help, but resveratrol has some similar attributes so perhaps it will have similar effects! I chose that product for myself because of its recommended higher label dose of 1200 mg/day. So it may be the higher dose that makes it effective for BPH. Other manufacturers seem to limit their daily dose to 400 mg, which may not be as effective for BPH?

Hi Art,

Thank you for sharing. Recently my husband has been diagnosed with enlarged median lobe putting pressure on his bladder. He has been on clinical strength prostate formula, stinging nettle and pygeum the last 6 months in addition to alfuzoxin for a year. I will add on the GSPE hoping to avert a TURP in June.

Hope you are well and wishing you and everyone here a blessed and healthy 2023

Myself, I would try many things first, in order to avoid TURP!

Thanks Art. Waking 5-6 times a night for a trickle is a pain. Going to hop straight onto this GSPE. Also been trying pygeum & saw palmetto, as well as mega strength beta sistosterol but no obvious change. Many thanks.

Please let us know if it is as helpful for you as it was for my friend as his is just one anecdotal report and more confirming reports will be helpful for the forum members who this applies to.

Mate, I know this is too early so it may be totally false, but I immediately came across Herbs of Gold Grape Seed Gold and started taking it. The night time trickle has had a noticeable improvement though is still a trickle and no more 6 times a night. It is still a problem but this has given me huge hope. I am excited in anticipation and will let you know in a months time. Just thought I'd let you know that improvement was noticeable almost immediately. Could be placebo effect but here's hoping. Thank you again.

Getz,

Thank you for the update and I am glad to hear that it may be helping you so quickly! BPH is a real pain!

The placebo effect is always a possibility, but it has worked very well for my friend and has continued to work for months. So lets hope the trickle returns to normal flow and the other related problems take a hike also!

One problem I see with the product you chose, if I found the same one, is that it contains selenium and in order to reach the 1200 mg of GSPE that was effective for my friend, you will likely be taking a very high amount of selenium. Is this the product that you got?

herbsofgold.com.au/products...

This product is only 250 mg of extract per tablet whereas the capsules my friend and myself are using are 400 mg each and he is taking 3 capsules per day for a total of 1200 mg of GSPE/day. It will take 5 of your tablets to equal 1250 mg of GSPE and that will also give you 125 micrograms of Selenomethionine as well as 15 mg Betacarotene, 125 mg Glutathione, 50 mg Zinc Citrate, 750 mg Vitamin C as Ascorbic Acid and 500 iu of Vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopheryl acid succinate. So you are getting various antioxidants with this particular GSPE product, but they come at a price of $45 for 60 tablets compared to what we are using at $17.98 for 240 capsules that are 400 mg of GSPE per capsule compared to your 250 mg GSPE per tablet.

On the other hand, if it works for you as intended, maybe not so expensive! Here is what we are using :

amazon.com/Carlyle-Grape-Ex...

Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Getz,

It has been almost two months since you started the grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) and I was wondering if the GSPE is still working to help alleviate your BPH?

Art

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345

just a note not to confuse with grapefruit seed extract.

Also restore gold has grape seed extract, 240 mg per day. I wonder if that is why it is included.

chartist profile image
chartist in reply to LAJ12345

GSPE seems likely to have benefit for people with PD, but the dose in Restore Gold seems too low to have much potential for benefit.

For the lucky rats and mice in the following studies, GSPE offered multiple benefits :

tandfonline.com/doi/full/10...

A relevant study quote :

' Furthermore, we found that GSSE treatment efficiently protected against neuronal loss and improved motor function in an in vivo 6-OHDA model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Altogether, our results show that GSSE acts at multiple levels to protect dopamine neurons from degeneration in a model of PD. '

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

A relevant quote from the study :

' GPC significantly influenced the cumulative proportion of surviving and substantially augmented the average life span in mice. In the transgenic PD model, the grape polyphenol (GP) diet enhanced memory reconsolidation and diminished memory extinction in a passive avoidance test. Behavioral effects of GP treatment were accompanied by a decrease in α-synuclein accumulation in the frontal cortex and a reduction in the expression of neuroinflammatory markers (IBA1 and CD54) in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Thus, a GP-rich diet is recommended as promising functional nutrition for aging people and patients with neurodegenerative disorders. '

And this new (January 2023) review adds further confirmation of the benefits of GSPE for neurodegenerative issues in PD :

mnj.ub.ac.id/index.php/mnj/...

A relevant review quote :

' The analysis summarized that GSE could significantly improve the biological hallmarks of PD with numerous mechanisms, including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, protection of dopaminergic neurons, anti-amyloid effect, anti-apoptotic, neurogenesis, and synaptogenesis. Although the precise mechanism underlying PD is still elusive, treatment should target not only a single cause of PD but instead several pathways that could lead to the disease. In conclusion, GSE should be considered a potential nutraceutical in clinical trials to prevent and alleviate Parkinson’s disease by multiple mechanisms. '

When I tested GSPE myself, I went as high as 3600 mg/day. I'm still taking it, but use a dose range of 1200 to 2400 mg/day.

that is a lot!

chartist profile image
chartist in reply to LAJ12345

Yes, it is a lot for the mice and rats, but given the known safety profile of GSPE, similar testing in humans could be interesting too.

Look at this 2012 study and the results achieved and it makes me wonder why no human follow up in 10 years?

Getz,

I found this animal study which suggests that GSPE is beneficial for BPH :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Here is a relevant study quote :

' In conclusion, the oral administration of Polymerized anthocyanin (PA) (100 mg/kg) decreased the prostate weight in a rat model of TP-induced BPH. PA also decreased the expression of androgen signaling such as AR, 5AR2, SRC1, and PSA; proliferation-related factors such as PCNA and cyclin D1 in prostate tissues, and reduced the serum DHT levels. Furthermore, PA ameliorated the BPH-mediated increase of Bcl-2 expression and increased the Bax expression. These results suggest that PA may serve as a potential natural therapeutic agent for BPH treatment. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its effects have not yet been elucidated. '

Interestingly when you convert the dose used in the animals to human equivalency for a person my size, it comes out to about 1250 mg/day, or 16.2 mg/kg/bw.

I've had BPH for several years. My dad and grandad had prostate cancer. So far my PSA is low enough to not be worried. But lately I'm getting up to pee several times a night. So I'm trying this: Prostadine six drops under the tongue once daily. I dunno whether it's a scam but the ingredients seem benign. Dad went through prostate surgery and was never normal after that. I'm 66 and hoping to not need surgery ever for this.

Would it be safe for those with orthostatic hypotension or low BP in general?

chartist profile image
chartist in reply to Pegcity

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that GSPE has a modest blood pressure lowering effect, though not in me, but rather as seen in studies. It would obviously be best to check with your doctor first and while having that discussion with the doctor, you might ask if increased salt intake or licorice intake would be useful to try and elevate your blood pressure to minimize the risks associated with orthostatic hypotension.

I was giving him 2 capsules for last 2 weeks. Just upped it to 3. He is also simultaneously taking saw palmetto+ pygeum, clinical strength prostate formula. It would be great if GSPE worked then he would not have so many capsules to swallow for his prostate

Hi Art,

it’s hard to tell because some nights are good and some are not. It’s not as clear cut as Getz.

He is on so many prostate supplements I think we will thin it out to just grapeseed . He is seriously considering Rezeum procedure but he is doing ablation first for his afib and flutter in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the thought.

Perhaps you can go down to just GSPE and Hesperidin. This new study (April 2023) suggests that hesperidin also has anti BPH effects :

sciencedirect.com/science/a...

Here is a relevant study quote :

' In summary, the present study demonstrated the anti-BPH effect and its underlying mechanism using the phytochemical HSP in vivo and in vitro as part of an effort to replace synthetic drugs with side effects. Furthermore, blocking the downstream cascade by effectively inhibiting the activity of TGF-β1 could be a potential therapeutic approach to prevent the development and progression of BPH. '
