Does Walking Barefoot Have Health Benefits?

Overview

Walking barefoot might be something you only do at home. But for many, walking and exercising barefoot is a practice they do daily.

When a toddler is learning to walk, parents are told to let this process happen naturally, and without shoes. That’s because shoes can affect how a child uses the muscles and bones in their feet.

Kids also receive feedback from the ground when they walk barefoot, and it improves their proprioception (awareness of their body in space).

As a child gets older, we shove their feet into shoes and lose the benefits that come from walking barefoot.

That’s why advocates of barefoot walking and exercising are pushing back on wearing shoes all day long and encouraging all of us to let our feet be free.

Thal,

There is another benefit to walking bare foot when outside that was not mentioned in the article you linked to. It is referred to as Earthing/Grounding which allows your body to be grounded to the earth. It is thought to work like a whole body antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals in the body. Here are two study links that show it to be beneficial, but it requires the bare feet or body actually touching the earth. Laying in the sand at the beach would be a good example. Laying on concrete that has been sprayed with water on a summer day would be another way.

There are even bedding grounding devices that offer Earthing effects while laying down in bed. These are usually connected to the house's grounding system. This area of health deserves further research to help zero in on maximal health effects as well as to help determine how to best employ it for maximal health benefit. The bedding application allows a practical way to practice Earthing year round, as it can be hard to walk in your bare feet outside in the dead of winter.

There is more than just pillow cases sheets and mats. There are also stick-ons, wrist bands and foot pads that can be used when sitting at your computer.

Thanks again I am going to try some. Any recommendations on which one to start with?

No, but I would look at the reviews of the higher rated products to see what people have to say about their effects.

A free way to test it for yourself is just to sit with your bare feet on the ground outside. If your home is on concrete with earth underneath the concrete and you have a tile floor, that should be good enough to test Earthing, otherwise you will have to do it outside. In the study, they used 30 minutes of Earthing per day. If this helps you in any way, then you can give consideration to purchasing one of the many products. The most mentioned benefits seems to be improved sleep and reduced pain.

I’ve slept on an earthing sheet for three years. I’ve not tried to analyse the benefits but I sleep very well and have no pain so perhaps the sheet does help! I’ve felt it reduces the damaging effects of emf in the home.

Thank you for the feedback, Dap! Your idea on EMF seems possible as EMF is known to raise oxidative stress while Earthing is noted for reducing it.

Dap,

Have you ever taken a vacation from earthing and did you notice a difference?

Yes for two weeks when we moved house, and no I didn’t notice any difference but everything was different at the time.

We were between houses staying with my daughter - different bed, different diet, reduced supplements, stressed about the sale… Not a good situation for a trial!

Oh, okay, that makes sense.

A few years ago I went to a therapist with a vegatest machine used for testing for food allergies. We tested my reaction on and off the earthing blanket. My body was much happier on!

I've used these shoes for several years. The grip gives extra security. I used them to run on an asphalt track. It takes time to adjust to walking without heel padding.

Hi Thai, I've been wearing non-supportive shoes for several years. They take some adjusting. My experience is that for prolonged walking on flat concrete surfaces you need supportive footwear. Around the house or walking on more forgiving surfaces such as grass or sand barefoot can work.
