Harnessing Probiotics to Deliver Parkinson’s Disease Treatment

Summary: A newly developed probiotic bacteria that can synthesize the dopamine precursor L-DOPA is safe, well-tolerated, and eliminates the side effects associated with L-DOPA use for Parkinson’s

Researchers have engineered probiotic bacteria that can synthesize the dopamine precursor L-DOPA, a powerful mainstay treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Preclinical tests show that the new treatment approach is not only safe and well-tolerated but also eliminates side effects that eventually develop when L-DOPA is taken orally.

Thanks for sharing. Is this available now?

Not yet. It appears to work in animal models, but they are in process of initiating FDA approval for clinical testing of this novel gut microbiome therapeutic technology.

How long before FDA's approval and when the results of this clinical testing? :)

Thanks for sharing. Hope the FDA fast tracks this. Else this is going to take a few years.

If this is eventually available, let's hope they don't price gouge like the manufacturers of PS128.

Will we still have to watch the timing on protein intake?

Good question. I don't know the answer.

What can we do to get priority on FDA to fast track such things?

Sounds great and promising. Thanks Jim. I firmly believe in probiotics and the saying all disease begins in the gut seems to ring true.

I remember Farooqi posting on the small clinical trial on PS 128 in February 2021 by Benedbiomed and how that led me to the Taiwanese PS 128 which my husband has been taking since June 2021.

It has been life changing- though my husband keeps asking me - are you sure this is helping me? He is tired of the heaps of supplements and capsules he has to swallow. I don’t blame him.

The thing is PD pervades practically every part of the body- from sleep, balance, fatigue, digestion, nocturia, constipation, brain fog etc and throw in atrial fibrillation and bladder CA as well. Hence a plethora of supplements to address the many symptoms.

It is stressful dealing with all this but Hell hath no fury than a woman who has been told I don’t want to take so many supplements after she has spent hours trying to decipher clinical trials and trying to find the best combination. Anyone looking at my supplement cupboard would think I was nuts. But hope springs eternal- like Despe, CC and many others we keep looking for that magical elixir that will make everything right again and more bearable.

So Jim, I look forward to trying the new probiotic though I am presently really happy with PS 128 ( and the coronet duo ) and what it has achieved for us. God is good.

Has your husband been dx with PD, Millbrook?

Millbrook profile image

He has not been diagnosed though a neurologist did say he was slower on one side. My dad had PD and I am seeing a replay of the symptoms.

Hi Millbrook- do you mind if I ask if there were any symptoms in particular that were helped by the PS128 and the coronet duo? I ordered the PS128 - and my husband with PD has taken it for about a month (one capsule in the morning) but I must admit not consistently (my fault- he rakes it when I remember to give it to him). Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shorebird.

My husband takes 2 sachets of PS 128 just before bed. That is the dose used in the clinical trial by Benedbiomed. Some members have got results taking one sachet of 30 billion but others have had no results taking one.

I wrote a post on PS 128 after taking it for 2.5 weeks and the coronet duo for 6 weeks both of which we have continued since May/June 2021.

I am very religious about taking PS 128 and if we forget at night, he takes it the next morning on an empty stomach and again before bed.

Here are the most significant improvements:-

1. Balance normalised

No more stumbling

2. Akinesia - slow movements normalised.

3. Driving- normalised as opposed to snail travel and poor lane discipline

4. More alert

You can also read about the improvements delboy had taking PS 128.

Presently he only uses the coronet once a day.

in reply toMillbrook

Is this where you get it from?

solaceprobiotic.com/?utm_so...

Appears they are out of stock. I thought it was pills only. Sachets are preferable I think

Hi CC,

I bought it from wellbeingsg.com

If you purchase 10 boxes you get 2 free.

I get the green one with PS 128 +K21- ACTIVE

It is in powder form and one sachet is 30 billion so he takes 2 sachets =60 billion as per clinical trial.

Jim,

This sounds similar to how Berberine works through the gut microbiome to produce more levodopa and dopamine in the brain. Berberine in studies has shown the ability to reduce levodopa dosing .

Hello, Good day.

What about non engineered probiotics? Using them to ferment foods that would raise L-Dopa? There's the Mucuna Pruriens bean.

studyfinds.org/gut-power-st... An article was pretty upbeat about Bacillus Subtilis.

Has anyone used Bacillus Subtilis?
