Red Light, negative effects.

A while ago I bought the TheraPad from Well Red. I stopped using it because it was causing me more bradykinesia. Has anyone experienced this?

Anything that can potentially help the body can also potentially harm the body. Known as the risk/benefit ratio.

Which part of your body did you wrap it around? From my understanding its meant to help alleviate pain on the part its wrapped around

Hi, whether I place the TheraPad over my head or on my stomach, immediately after applying for 20', my bradykinesia increases. It increases more when I wrap it around my head, of course. I asked Dr. Catherine Hamilton, of Well Red, but she was unable to provide any explanations. Evidently the red light is not for me.

The TheraPad is not designed to be used on the head. It will get warm and increase the temperature. Good for muscle pain, but probably not for the brain.

Dosage is important for NIR and red light therapy. A too low dose will not have any effect and a too high dose could have a negative effect.

I would have tried with a shorter time and/or using pulsing, and/or lowering the power by don't use NIR and red light at the same time and/or by increasing the distance from the light source to your body.

I would have started with a low dose and worked my way up to see if I could find an optimal dosage to get a beneficial effect.

Another aspect is long term vs short time effect. For example for exercise, it is not uncommon that PwP notice a short term worsen of symptoms directly afterwards. Maybe because of that dopamine levels decreases during the intervention. Some of us on levdopa therapy compensate that by temporary increasing the levdopa intake. I have noticed a similar effect sometimes myself for NIR therapy. So I would also take that into consideration.

Thanks Mimer for your very precise directions. Since the principle is the same, before buyng Coronet at a high price, I preferred the TheraPad to experience its effects, I have used the device in all ways and for different periods. It was useless, in fact I would say harmful for me and I don't think that with Coronet the effects are very distant. Thanks so much for your time.

I’ve been using the coronet from Wellred. When I initially started, it definitely made my stiffness worse. I was using it for 24 minutes twice daily . I then contacted Dr Hamilton and she suggested that I start with 6 minutes and then work my way up. I currently am on 10 minutes twice daily and it has not caused any negative symptoms.

Thank you Prakash, it is clear thet we are all different but, apart from the negative effects, what are the positive ones?

Not sure, I started using it last month so it’s too early to say

It would be useful to share the red light effects in the future, whatever they are. Thanks again.

Ciao Fed,

Ciao Gio

Hi Fed,

There is a rule in these things that is worth keeping in mind before making a definitive judgment “What caused it will make it fade”, in other words the use of certain nourishing or regenerating treatments can initially give side effects that are not directly related but which the body then overcomes by continuing with the treatment itself. Treatment acts,-> shifts things into the body->unrelated side effects-> body adjustment-> new condition. Of course I am talking about mild side effects that are overcome in the short term by continuing treatment. If you more use it more get worse, this is not the case. Just my weak opinion.

Greetings from Brianza and for a world without the madness of war. Hi Gio

Hi Gio' I always read you with pleasure and you never fail to answer me. You are right about insisting but the resulting effect is too unpleasant and lasts for the whole day. So to hell with the red light! May there be peace in every corner of the world.

Some studies report that red light therapy (RLT) can induce oxidative stress in the form of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) during application. Oxidative stress can definitely worsen PD symptoms. This aspect of RLT is not often discussed. This rapid increase in oxidative stress is likely to activate Nrf2 as a counter measure to try and neutralize the elevated oxidative stress levels which will increase total antioxidant capacity and then reduce oxidative stress to more normal levels. Here is a study where they mention the increased oxidative stress created by RLT and use hydrogen water, which is considered a potent antioxidant to help neutralize elevated ROS levels, which may be additive to Nrf2 activation.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/a...

The fact that you regularly get a strong negative reaction to RLT suggests that you may be getting too much of an RLT dose at one time. As with many therapeutics, the dose can be the difference between effectiveness and toxicity.

If you are up to the challenge, it may be useful to try and determine what the minimal length of treatment is needed to cause the negative reaction. Reducing your dose to a level just below where you start to notice a negative reaction may be a level that is more suitable for you. The regular activation of Nrf2 seems likely to have positive health effects in the longer term outlook.

I am curious if you have used your RLT to target your gut biome and if the negative effect is apparent at that application location also?

Hi Arte, I do not observe the negative reaction during the application but after, when I have finished and take the first steps. The balance becomes precariuos and I seem to remain glued with my feet on the ground. When I use the device on my belly, to target the microbiome, the same happens later. Clearly to a lesser extent given the distance from the head. As always, thank you for your time Arte.
