Amantadine : is it Neuroprotective? Can it reduce glutamate excitoxicity?

Anyone taking amantadine? It may be slowing progression.

Looking in to means of reducing glutamate excitoxicity which is shown to increase decline, I happened upon the knowledge that Amantadine, is a NMDA receptor antagonist.

What I have read so far suggests that Amantadine is indeed Neuroprotective

Amantadine , in experimental studies shows Neuroprotective properties.

Dive in Bolt! It’s my hope he and others will help me determine if I’m on to something of value. Or maybe my revelation is common knowledge. 😉

I take GOCOVRI which is slow released Amantadine. I've been taking Amantadine, 100 mg , for quite a few years (10?) but a year ago I started taking 2 capsules at 137 mgs each, 274 mgs total. I take it at bedtime. I was having trouble with typing and small movements. My neurologist didn't say anything about it being in neuro protective, but that doesn't mean it's not. He did tell me they thought Azilect is, but recent research has shown it may not be?? I read they used to use it to treat the flu. 🥊

I’m trying to get switched from Azilect to Selegiline for the reasons sited in the above article. I had read individual studies but this sums them up. They are old but highly relevant.

I’m pestering you about this but my pestering is truly full of ❤️ And support. 🌸

And I’m glad you are taking Amantadine based on what I’ve recently been learning about it.

Amantadine can also be useful in treating covid. Currently there is a clinical trial conducted in Poland: clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show...

Thank for the link. My husband and I got all 3 shots for Covid but a few weeks later he tested positive but his symptoms were very mild. During the week that he had it, I had a cough for 2 days. I didn't get tested because I assume I probably had it and because it didn't last long then it wouldn't help me or anyone else. I'm sure the Gocovri/Amantadine helped.

Glad you were helped to avoid severe case. There is a number of Polish physicians who have been using Amantadine for covid treatment since the beginning of the pandemic but only after one of high government officials was successfully treated this way, the support started rolling and clinicians finally got the money to conduct a clinical trial.

Both jujube and theanine modulate glutamate / NMDA receptors

in reply to House2

Both jujube and L theanine increase GABA. As does melatonin. I recently learned about there being an excess of GABA astrocytes in the PD brain that causes the dopamine neurons to go in to a dormant or zombie state. This is related to glutamate exitotoxicity which causes neuro degeneration. I do not yet understand this process enough to know how to proceed. But I am at present wary of increasing GABA.
