whatever approach you decide to take it will be a lot easier and more effective if you eat "real food" which means cooking for yourself! I eat lots of fruit and vegetables and its a very natural diet with lots of nutritional advantages but especially good for fibre. I rarely eat out and mostly avoid packaged food. The typical supermarket packaged food diet is not good for anyone but especially PwPs with the usual bowel issues. I always steam my vegetables - quicker and tastier - or oven bake a medley with olive oil and spices.

There have been some very comprehensive posts about this in the past few months. You can find them if you do a search and then select ‘my community’ to narrow it down.

A few years ago I tried HDT , my neurologist encouraged me to stop taking it , it did not help the tremor

What! Why? He encouraged you to STOP taking it?! What qualifies him to voice an opinion on something he obviously has no knowledge of!! It might not seem to help the tremor but it stops PD progression amongst other things and that is BIG! I have not had to increase my medication in the last five years. No rigidity. More energy....

In some people it provides no benefit and unpleasant side effects. That may be why the doctor advised against its use.

Yes, sorry. I suppose I don’t hear about unpleasant side effects. However, Yaya29 didn’t mention side effects, just not helping tremor.

Didn't mention any benefits either.

I’ve been using for over two years and I’ve never had constipation and I’m tremor dominant and the B1 has not stopped the tremors just like dr C said it wouldn’t, but I’m sure it will unplug you (according to my wife’s experience). B1 has helped me with energy, depression, freezing, stiffness, etc

These things work for me. Plenty of water throughout the day, a probiotic, prunes, plenty of veggies and fruit which can be made into smoothies that are a bit easier for our slow bowels, especially broccoli , which from what I’ve read, act like little brooms in the intestinal tract, sweeping things out better, vitamin c and magnesium. I’ve dealt with this constipation problem for many years as many Pwps have thanks to our slow moving gut and it can be a real pain, literally. I’ve also tried many supplements and powders and such but it wasn’t until I discovered an herb called Cascara Sagrada, did I finally find relief. I don’t take it every day but maybe twice a week and it may take a day to work but boy does it work. I believe I read about on this site here from another member so I tried it and I’m very pleased and relieved. It’s available on Amazon, fairly inexpensive from what I remember. I’ve also noticed that things get moving a little better right after I take my morning dose of simemet, also something else I read here. And…don’t neglect exercise, walking gets things moving as well. I agree, stay away from packaged and processed and fast food, they are not helpful at all with this issue. Best to you. Blessings.

I wanted to add to my previous reply. Stay away from gluten and sugar, both of these will just add to the problem.

Epsom salt, magnesium and vitamin C. I say vitamin B1 first because for most of us parkies especially, B1 is a miracle vitamin which can often help with numerous symptoms.

I remedied the problem by adding prunes, prune juice, and fresh apple sauce to my diet. I have one tablespoon each of flax meal and chia seeds daily. I also eat lots of vegetables and ensure I have plenty of water.

Hi,

I used to get constipation pretty regularly but after a lot of reading and experimenting I came up with the following which has worked wonders for me.

Smoothie

Half a frozen banana, 1 cup of frozen broccoli, small bowl of hot porridge, prune juice and orange juice and blend

Very cheap, very easy to make, lots of nutrients and most importantly keeps everything regular, soft and no straining.

I also take 3 pints of water in the morning which helps hydrate.

Hope it helps as much as it helped me :-)

A Squatty Potty seems to help. I bought mine on Amazon for about $20. Also, I find that large bathrooms (as in stores, for instance) are better than my tiny one at home - some kind of psychological effect. I also drink a lot of water, take Magnesium Citrate (500 mg), C (1,500 mg.), eat prunes and apricots, as well as vegetables, and I don't eat meat or poultry. I think that cheese might cause constipation, but it's one of my favorite foods, so I try to lessen consumption of it.
