So many capsules, tablets, powders to swallow....

Hello everyone,

I trust this post of mine finds you well.

I wanted to ask you, how do you deal with all these things we have to swallow?

More than once I found myself choking on a huge omega 3 capsule or a polyvitamin one. Maybe even a Mg capsule.

And what about the constant need to drink, I don't even manage to get to hydrate myself. Because I am all the time busy swallowing something. Supplements, ldopa or other medicines, drink mannitol. I wanted to start high dose vitamin B1 a year ago but I don't even manage to eat and drink enough to absorb what I'm taking. I'm all the time on the edge of dehydration.

As a consequence, I am not taking my supplements every day, but rather once in 3 days

I have also started to get nauseous with the mannitol, after taking it successfully for 3 years. So I've had to reduce the dose and I'm not happy with that.

How are you guys doing?

I changed to omega 3 liquid that I keep in the fridge. For a multi I recommend also changing to a liquid. Mary Ruth’s has a great multi in liquid form. Ez Melts is a great option as well. I take their B and D. They slowly dissolve on the tongue. To strengthen your ability to swallow, please seek out info on strengthen your voice projection and singing ability. The same muscles are used.

I agree with cclemonade.. change what you can to liquid or dissolvable. I’ve done this with omega to cod liver oil, D3 & K2, melatonin, B1. And sing!! I explain how singing helps swallowing in my book - Music as medicine particularly in Parkinson’s amazon.co.uk/Music-As-Medic...

I agree with the liquid form of things and I use many gummy forms of different vitamins and such as well which has been very helpful.

Did you think it might be a PD symptom that made it difficult for you to swallow? I was wondering, though my mum, who doesn't have PD, also finds it difficult to swallow some big tablets or capsules

Pd patients find that their pills only make them feel better for a few hours and then they have to take more of them. Then they find they need another pill to deal with the side effects of the first pills and so it goes. We have to realize that none of the Pd medication slows down the Pd and it continues to get worse.

We have to find another way to deal with our Pd, as I have.

I find using warm water makes them much easier to swallow. I avoid times when I am tired. There is a bit of acquired skill in using sufficient water forcefully enough to throw the tablet to the back of the mouth so it drops down the throat cleanly. Using thickened liquids like smoothies is an alternative. Sigh :-) ....
