BRAIN FOG, FORGETFULNESS or MENTAL CONFUSION??? What Works For Our Members

chartist profile image
45 Replies

I'm starting this post in the hope that forum members will list what worked for them to treat either brain fog, forgetfulness or mental confusion. This will make it easier for anyone on the forum to search for ideas to relieve these three common issues associated with PD and age in general. I know that this has been mentioned extensively on this forum and having an easy to search for single post with remedies and helpful ideas could be quite useful to all of the over 19,000 forum members as well as visitors who are just passing through.

I will start this out with my remedy that worked very well for a friend who was having memory issues and senior moments that had been steadily worsening for about 3 years or so. I have written about this elsewhere on the forum, but will link to it hear The remedy consisted of 5 common and inexpensive supplements and worked very well to resolve all of her memory issues and restore her memory to what I remember as her norm from many years ago and she is still benefiting from those supplements to this day as all of her memory gain has been retained and she is a very happy person now! Here is a link to what she did and how exactly it helped her :

healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

I know that quite a few forum members have previously posted what has worked for them, but it is not easy to find those remedies now so having this post with this specific title should make it easier to locate as many of these solutions as possible by using the search feature of this forum on the title line of each forum page.

Thank you to all of you who add your remedies to this post!!!

I use Ambroxol to keep me clear of brain fog, as well as a variety of supplements to leverage it, for example Acetyl L Carnitine, NAC & Ubiquinol to name a few.

I think you might like this book – "Nutritional Lithium: A Cinderella Story: The Untold Tale of a Mineral That Transforms Lives and Heals the Brain" by James Greenblatt, Kayla Grossmann.

5 to 20mg Lithium Orotate per day. Brain fog gone in 2 weeks.

Dr Laurie Mischley is referenced about 20 times.

bass,

You're a good sized guy, does the 5mg work as well as the 20 mg for you?

To clarify, try 5 for 2 weeks. If no improvement, try 10 for 2 weeks. Then 15, up to 20. I got great results with 15mg but after a year I dropped down to 10 and still good.

I'm a big guy, yes, but my brain is average size!

I’m no expert, and would hate to give you wrong advice.. Check out work by Dr Laurie Mishley. She recommends up to 20mg if needed, but she does advise having hair analysis done first (something I didn’t do). It’s generally safe

Hi Art!

Of all the supplements, the best remedy for my husband is undoubtedly AMBROXOL!

chartist profile image
chartist in reply toDespe

Thank you, Despe, for that addition! I had read that it could be useful for PD, but not that particular application. Interesting, at what dose and how long did it take for the effect to become apparent?

He started at 600mg and upped it to 750mg a couple of days ago. Benefits/effects became apparent after almost 2 months.

What benefits has he seen Despe? Mostly brain fog? Thanks and hope you are doing well?

Despe profile image
Despe in reply toConnieD

Yes, mental clarity. He started to participate in discussions, he gets involved in daily activities, he laughs with jokes and TV programs, and started to get involved with different games he was involved with before PD (b-ball, tennis, fishing, etc.). If one has mental clarity, guess it means Executive Function starts coming back.

So happy for him Despe, does he use the red light coronet as well?

Faithfully, twice a day. Everything helps, dear friend.

For me it has been worth it because my HWP has other health conditions.

For me, diet changes have had a big effect on my brain function. When I stopped eating gluten, I literally deflated. Then my thinking became more clear and my energy level increased. It was a hard change for me to make because I was a very passionate baker writing a cookbook but the difference has been amazing.

I would echo parkbear comment about the tremor being due to cutting the c/l. Why cut it if it's working and we'll tolerated? . I'm surprised smokeypurple didn't beat me to it but I think red light therapy is good for brain fog.

I'm doing some brain training using BrainHQ. They have some pretty challenging exercises designed by neurosciencts. Apparently it was developed for people who've had mild brain trauma such as xmilitary types.

Is it helping and if so, how so?

Art

Bundoran in reply tochartist

Its not doing any harm anyway and I do feel that I'm working the brain. I'm only at it a couple of weeks so I'm not going to make any claims for it yet. I was doing an eye/visual-processing programme for the last 6 months and that has been very helpful for my driving. I can drive faster and have more confidence.

May be that you have problems with brain fog, mood, memory etc... I've been using it (250mg/day) since 6-7 months with excellent results. Not even every day, but only when need it.. works even better if combined with choline. Lots of info about brands, dosing and usage available in the Net, in case interested to try. Just be patient to find the dose you need. I started with 50mg/day, adding another 50mg every 3th day. At 250mg it kicked off. Highly recommend it.. ' <<<

My functional dr recently prescribed Synapsin for me. It needs a drs prescription to buy. I get from a compounding pharmacy.

Synapsin –Nasal Spray Delivery System for Neurological Health

Synapsin® is an innovative, patent-pending powder blend of ginsenoside Rg3 and nicotinamide riboside, along with components to aid in solubilization and dispersion. These ingredients are designed to be used in the support of neurological and cognitive health.† Synapsin® is commonly used in combination with methylcobalamin in formulations that support neuronal function and cognition.4

SYNAPSIN® FOR TBI & BRAIN HEALTH

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of injury, death, and disability in the U.S.1,2 According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 2.4 million traumatic brain injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2009, with an estimated 75% occurring as concussions. Of these, approximately 16.5% are associated with a sports-related injury.2,3 A study of nearly 3,000 serious head trauma cases reported that 52% of survivors were moderately to severely disabled at one-year post accident.4

BRAIN DISORDERS

More than one million adults in the U.S. are diagnosed annually with chronic brain disease or disorder, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most prevalent cause of adult-onset brain disorders.5 Research estimates that in the U.S., 35.8% of those 85 or older have moderate or severe memory impairment, and individuals 85 years and older are the fastest growing segment of the population.5

BRAIN FOG

Brain fog symptoms can vary from person to person based on mental and physiological condition(s). Brain fog can cause mild to chronic mental confusion, the inability to focus, and poor memory recall. It can also be associated with autoimmune diseases, lifestyle stress, cancer treatments, aging and more. Brain fog may also be commonly referred to as “brain fatigue” which may be linked to essential nutrient(s) deficiencies.

NEUROPLASTICITY

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize and create neural connections. As we age, neuroplasticity can decline and an increase in neurodegeneration can occur, with oxidative stress as a major factor. Oxidative stress can be attributed to brain aging and memory impairment and can also be hastened due to environmental and nutritional toxins.

Very confused: Is Mucinex the same as Ambroxol, medindia.net/drug-price/amb... Apparently this site is wrong!

And adding to my confusion: Why isn't Mucosolvan (Ambroxol) sold in US pharmacies? ask.metafilter.com/271544/W...

chartist profile image
chartist in reply toGcf51

Gcf51,

The active component in Mucinex is Guaifenesin which makes mucus less sticky and easier to clear. Ambroxol has no Guaifenesin. It has Ambroxol HCI as its active component. It works by thinning the mucus to allow easier clearing. They are two different products in the US.

goodrx.com/guaifenesin/does...

drugs.com/ambroxol.html

They are both considered mucolytics.
