..........and the guilty supplement is...........?

Hey everybody. I’m back on the supplements band wagon after a couple of years deciding that they were more money than they were worth. But we try anything twice as PWP right? 😂

Trouble is, one of these little beauties is giving me terrible upset tummy (gurgling like Ol’ Faithful). Without me trying to isolate one at a time would anybody have any suggestions about which of the following is the most likely culprit: thanks in advance.

PQQ, Resveratrol, LCarnatine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Coenzyme Q10?

I take some others but this group are the new boys in town, at least this time around 🤔

I don't know whether the supplements work or not but at least can induce placebo effect in some. Anything that alleviate symptoms is welcome even the Placebo

I just wish this gas could be mistaken for placebo!

I take generic Beano (Walmart brand) with every meal and my gas problem is almost gone. It's inexpensive too, which is a bonus.

Jeeves,Supplements you have listed don't seem to be digestive offenders, however they usually have inactive ingredients which may trigger a reaction. Mannitol can be definitely a culprit - some supplements contain it as an inactive ingredient and I suspect there could be other ones hiding in fine print that can contribute to this problem.

Yes manitol is definitely a laxative.

An interesting point. I DID chuck an extra large spoon of the old Mannitol in today now that I come to think about it. 🤔. Thanks for the observation.

Mannitol messed up my gut for about two weeks when I tried it - only took it twice.

Most likely the l-carnitine. medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

Also be sure to cycle pqq - you don't want to take it every day.

Thanks 🙏. How come?

Jeeves,

When I was supplementing with alpha lipoic acid it did bother my gut a bit.

Scroll down this link to read about it:

neuroneeds.com/active-ingre...

Here is the quote :

>>> ' While any supplement taken into the stomach can cause nausea, alpha lipoic acid seems to be a frequent offender. ' <<<

They recommend starting low and slow to possibly offset this effect.

Ok on a relatively small amount Art. It’s when I take it up to 600 mg I start getting issues.

Well, I was on 600, 1200 and 1800 mg as an experiment, so you can get a better idea of why I had a gut reaction.

Yeah it’s pretty corrosive stuff Art 😂

Also alpha lipoic acid chelates mercury, which sounds like a good thing - unless you have mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth. Then it can be disastrous. Because it stirs up the mercury, but there is just too much for the ala to bind to, so now you have more mercury floating around ready to get to your brain. I dont know if you have any mercury fillings, but if you do, i would eliminate the ala.

But the alpha lipoic acid stabilizes your blood sugar which improves the tremors.

Jujubeeme - Mercury is a neurotoxin, and can cause a myriad of problems. It caused my PD. The risk of worsening PD symptoms is not worth the benefit of stabilizing blood sugar levels. I would look for something else to do that.

I hope that you drink a lot of organic unfiltered apple juice and eat an apple a day. Also taking natural pectin helps carry those heavy metals from your system. I didn't mean to offend you by my comment...

No offense taken. I didnt mean to give off that vibe. Im done with my mercury issue. I chelated in 2005 after finding out my mercury level was off the chart.

Or taking it on a full stomach.

Yes, I always had to take ALA with food or the gut issues were significantly increased.

An aside from the tummy upset issue -- you may want to check out the difference between l-carnitine and acetyl l-carnitine. I may be wrong, but from what I remember, the acetyl version can pass through the Blood Brain barrier and the non acetyl form can't. Making acetyl better for neurological issues. it's also thought to be more bioavailable. I'm a bit busy with new grandbaby, can't research but you might want to look into this.

Hadn’t thought of that. Nice one.

Are you still taking mucuna? That caused similar problems to my husband. He had stopped taking it for several days with no relief, so we dismissed it as being the culprit. But neurologist wanted him to stop it for a couple of months while we sorted out the Madopar, and voila, no more gut issues!

So, you don't have issues unless you take vitamins?

That’s too much of a double negative to be able to handle!

Jeeves, my friend, only best way to find out. Stop all of them and start back ONE BY ONE with at least ONE WEEK. between each other (any medication, any supplement or any new food or drink foreign to your gut). My doctor told me that it's the best way to narrow down the possibilities. 🤗

My money goes to alpha lipoic acid. It is a sulfur amino acid which, like Nacetylcysteine (another sulfur amino acid) can cause stomach upset. duckduckgo.com/?q=+Alpha+Li...
