I'm guessing this is "Too much too soon" syndrome. The body needs time to adapt to the stresses put on it. Even with extreme exercise the body would repair itself if enough time is given. Olympic athletes run 100 miles per day but only because of building up to it.

JohnPepper this might explain why fast walking may be beneficial while running may be detrimental
