Not a new idea but refreshing when expressed by an MD.
There is endless profit potential to treat chronic diseases. Hans Duvefelt, MD.

It is bit embarrassing when someone announces something they think is new, while the rest of us knew already..
Pharmaceutical companies are set up to make money, and the more of their product they sell, the more money they make. Dr. Kevin MD seems to have just discovered this, and acts surprised .
They will put their money into developing drugs which will give them the best return on their investment.
We are stuck with this capitalist system. The best we can do is have the government control their profits, by limiting the years of patent protection. If they are given no protection, they will not develop new drugs, and most new drugs come from our current system. No useful drugs have been developed by communist countries .
I look forward to other ideas from member of this site?
In fact, they abandon research funding for lack of results, see Pfizer and Merck.

I quote Mikael Dolsten, M.D., Ph.D., President of Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development
“LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR NEUROSCIENCE R&D DECISION
January 11, 2018
Our recent announcement to end our discovery and early clinical development efforts in neuroscience has been an extremely difficult decision and one that we have not taken lightly. We recognize the immense disappointment in the broader community, and we share this; at a personal level, many of us have seen first-hand the devastation of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. More than anything, we wanted to succeed in finding a meaningful therapy...”
It's a lazy analysis and not applicable to PD.
The next big thing in PD will generate some serious returns for its owner.
For the following reasons:
1. The existing treatments are largely unsatisfactory.
2. Because of 1, people are going to he less price sensitive to the next major advancement. Its not like just perservering with the current drugs is an alternative to a disease halting trearment.
3. People have already demonstrated a willingness to pay for expensive treatments (DBS and FUS). This is also due to point 1.
4. PD patients aren't actually that profitable. It's not something you (typically) have for 30 plus years. Discovering the next big thing will not kill a golden goose. In contrast, a disease halting treatment could add 15 or more years to the lifespan of PWP, making them potentially more profitable customers in other respects.
5. Even if it did (kill a golden goose), there are many companies investing in PD that don't get a dime from the current treatments. Why would those companies give a rat's ass about how much the current players are making, even if they are making big margins?
The idea that market participants won't innovate for fear of cannibalizing the existing revenue streams doesn't really jive with reality.
That's been my point for a long time! We do not take any pharmaceuticals. A lot of people think heart disease starts in the heart. It starts, for most people, in the gut with malnutrition and toxins. By malnutrition, I mean, not only the food you eat, but also the supplements you either do or do not take.
