Lion’s Mane mushrooms for PD?

reedboat2 profile image

I saw the film Fantastic Fungi last night and they stated without citation that Lion’s Mane was beneficial for neuro-regeneration. Anyone have any information on that subject?

Thanks- John G

Aunt Bean (she posts here as Fava-1) who grows fava beans as her main source of l-dopa takes it. Below is a link. I've recently started it, but have been down with a bad cold so everything is out of whack at the moment. There have been a few other posts in the past on it.

It has antioxidants, although I couldn't find them identified.

Enough evidence of neuroprotective properties and a seemingly good risk/reward ratio appear to make it worth considering as one supplement.

They are expensive unless you grow them yourself.

Hello :)

My father has been taking lions mane for about a year now. Mushroom is making him feel better especially with improving his smell and libido.

It doesn't have any side effects so It's great.

Best,

Nejc

My husband started Real Mushrooms powder, some time ago. It's a very good nootropic.

Thanks. Looks like they won’t ship the bulk pack to nz, only the capsules.

Capsules are just as good. It is a very good product.

Just a bit more expensive. I have been trying the mushroom wisdom brand but can’t say I notice any effects. 1100 mg in 4 tablets per day. I haven’t tried the whole 4 a day though.

Unfortunately natural products such as vitamins/supplements/minerals take time to affect one's health. :(

Yes, it is. I have some info on it which I will look for later. I give my husband Lion's Mane glycerite made by a colleague, but I have now bought the mushroom plugs to grow my own.

Hi Julie here’s what I found out today. Paul Stamets who is kind of Mr. Mushroom has a company in Olympia Washington called fungi perfecti. They sell Lion’s Mane on Amazon for $30 per 100 g powder. The recommended dose is 1.5 g per day. So that’s around $.45 per day. I just emailed Paul to see if he is interested in working with our group. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Is it mycelium or fruiting body of lion's mane? I've had some of P. Stamets' mushroom products and they were mycelium only. Not sure though which form is the most therapeutic, but the combination probably would be the best.

pdkid profile image
pdkid in reply tofaridaro

stamets thinks the benefits are in the mycelium and those "real mushroom" guys believe that its in the fruiting body (hence the difference in their products). but erinacines, the substance that has been shown to have the strongest Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) are found mostly in the mycelium. got my dad and the rest of us on stamets' stuff. its been less than a month, so we'll see. i do truly believe in the power of mushrooms though!!

has for sure helped my dad's mood. (and mine...)

reedboat2,

I think once people realize the true and complete health value of Lion's Mane, they will definitely be interested! Mushrooms in general are fairly impressive and offer a multitude of health benefits.

Have loved mushrooms all my life without knowing their health benefits. It's a delicacy in Greece, served grilled and stuffed with feta cheese, olive oil, and lemon juice.

I have been thinking about Hardy's therapy, but I don't know if it can replace all the vitamins/minerals/nootropics my husband is taking. I should call them for details, I guess.

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply toDespe

Yes, talk to them. Mine still takes plenty of other things too, but Hardy’s and now horny goat weed are the only 2 things that have had sudden and dramatic effects for him. It is possible it is the combination of the things he was already taking needing that one last product so maybe he needed all or many of the other things too! He is so much better now he is like a different person, hence my nagging everyone to try these things😊.

I know it's been a while since this conversation, but could you elaborate and rather more and specific detail about those two separate things that you mentioned, horny goat weed and the other one? And if you could be specific I'd prefer you name and then talk about each one separately so that I don't get them confused. willing to look into them but I need some kind of introduction and where to go to find out more. Thanks if you don't mind.

Hi Marion, sure.

Hardys daily essential nutrients

hardynutritionals.com/produ...

Lots of research on their webpage.

Hubby was very anxious and feeling not well when and he started on these. He had such severe anxiety he was suicidal and I had to take him to the mental health crisis unit. The sertraline they put him on made him even more suicidal and the mirtazapine they then put him on to stop the agitation made him apathetic so he was in a real state when I thought I would give these a go. My friend’s 9 year old had been on them a few years for ADD and he was a different child when on them but if he missed them he reverted back to his original behaviour so I thought they may help my hubby.

He went from 1x3 then 2 x 3 then 4x3 per day over the first week and within 3 days he felt so much calmer and seemed to be back to his normal self except his hands still didn’t work.

This year he has had an anxiety relapse at the beginning of winter and with covid lock-in with 3 teenagers and no social interaction and I’m struggling to get him out of it this time even with the hardys.

Read up on all the ingredients though. It has many of the things others are taking all in one product so easy to use. I was able to replace many different other supplements with this one that had everything in it which was easier, and I was happier with it as it is made in Canada and has a lot of research and good quality control. Overall although it is expensive I don’t think it is as much as buying individual ingredients and it is in researched quantities of each component and in a natural form which is easy to absorb so they say.

He still takes the 12 per day. At one point I thought I would reduce them a little just to see if his need for the nutrients had decreased over time but he felt slightly worse. Then before seeing the GP for advice on his reaction to the madopar I decided to stop them completely for a week as the GP would probably say to try that anyway in case they were causing anxiety (they never believe a supplement can help) and he got very much worse over the week he wasn’t taking them, feeling very ill, fluey , nauseous, anxious and sick so he is back to the 12 again.

They have a greens and probiotic product and a olive leaf one for gut health too, and an amino acid one and inositol which was helpful for anxiety when it was mild.

HGW he had an amazing change in energy and his apathy disappeared in 3 days and yes it did work like viagra! It was not a placebo as I did not tell him he was on a new trial or try to instigate sex but he suddenly became interested after no interest for years. (I have his permission to try new things I have researched as he is not at all interested to research or know about anything himself but wants to try things). I actually tried it on him more because icaarin is included in a fountain of youth type product I saw and I noticed he was taking many of the other components of it already but not this one. So I researched it and it sounded worth a try.

He took it at the same time as 1/4 tsp carnosine so I’m not sure if worked together but it was the only empty stomach slot available. He had already been taking the carnosine a while so I don’t think the effect was the carnosine unless it was the combination. He took it before lunch and before dinner regularly for months and seemed to be doing very well on it but at the beginning of this year he saw the PD nurse who insisted he start on the C/L as his shoulders were very stiff and of course that also needed the empty stomach slot. I was worried they were reacting with the HGW and carnosine so stopped those as he was feeling very nauseous once taking the C/L and he hasn’t tried it again as he has been very unwell since taking the Kinson C/L and now the madopar.

I have to say the C/L has only made his anxiety and stiffness worse and he is still not good. Perhaps I should start the HGW and carnosine again as a trial as he it is possible he may have felt worse because he stopped the HGW or carnosine.

This is the brand he took. The full spectrum one. 2 a day.

nz.iherb.com/pr/planetary-h...

My current trial in my quest to quell his anxiety is this device :

Apollo neuro. apolloneuro.com. We are on day 2. He was very reluctant to try it as he can’t handle new things or the thought of new things but I managed to convince him. After a couple of sessions he asked for it to be put on for another session. I will report back on this trial soon once he has had a few weeks of it as it is supposed to take a while to have an effect and he is an extreme anxiety case.

It is easy to use. He wears it on his ankle like a watch and I can reset timer from my iPad without any fuss for him so he has seemed to accept it now.

He has recently tried a tens and ems machine revitive.co.nz which he likes when he uses it but when I ask if he wants to use it he says not today.

I’m hoping the Apollo will calm him enough that he is able to tolerate the glove attachment of the ems machine as I am trying to stimulate nerve and blood flow to his fingers which have always his main problem and source of depression. I feel that problem is physical as he sits stiffly at a desk playing bridge online and will not cease!! It makes his shoulders very stiff. I have to break the cycle and get him to move his shoulders and neck but the anxiety means he is frozen in inaction and his obsessive compulsion means he won’t stop playing online bridge to exercise except his daily walk.

Anyway that was probably more info than you asked for🤣

LAJ12345 You spoke of a glove attachment above. Is it similar to the Tass gloves?

Is your husband still on Horny Goat's Weed?

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply toJayPwP

hi, the attachment for the revitive is this.

shavershop.co.nz/revitive/c...

We gave up on that a while back as he would not use it as it required some difficulty getting it on as it was snug and his hands don’t work well to be able to get them on.

He hasn’t been on the hgw now for quite a while. I wasn’t sure if it was safe to be on it long periods. He has had some periods of feeling really good then some very dark patches so that was the least of our worries. A real cycle of ups and downs. Last time he was down they fiddled with his madopar ie put him on a stronger dose and the slow acting one and he was very bad to the point of being suicidal again so we had to reduce it back down again to the original amount and put him back on the rapid one. Then added entacapone. He started getting the peak dopamine rigidity in his shoulders so at that point he stopped all the other things for a while just in case any of them were interacting with the new drug entacapone. We cut the entacapone back to 1/2 tab and that rigidity resolved.

Then I slowly introduced the other vitamins again and so far he is the best he has been for ages. I think the COMT inhibitor helps keep dopamine and seratonin in his system.

Problem is when he has started feeling really good on eg ssri in the past he overshoots on the seratonin and starts compulsive then manic behaviour so hoping the half dose will not push him over the edge again.

ED still a problem though but not through lack of interest as the seratonin boost is increasing that interest too. Maybe we should try hgw again.
