Thank you !... I checked that my dose was safe at 400 mg/day

That's a standard dose. Milk of Magnesia would be an overdose; not what you would want to take every day.

Only if you get no magnesium from dietary sources. Are you supplementing because your magnesium levels are low?

pvw2,

Nice article!

Another consideration is the type of magnesium being used. Some forms are considered to be poorly absorbed such as magnesium oxide, so if you are taking 400 mg day, you are not likely getting the full amount of the amount you are taking and may get diarrhea if you try increasing your dose to compensate for the poor absorption factor. On the other hand, a well absorbed form such as magnesium glycinate or magnesium aspartate, is likely to be absorbed much better than the oxide form. I have not seen the magnesium l threonate form cause diarrhea at the recommended dosing and magnesium glycinate seems to be a bit better at avoiding diarrhea at the recommended dosing. Magnesium taurate less so in this respect.

Another consideration is that even magnesium chloride oil (MO) which is applied topically is well absorbed and will add significantly to your total magnesium intake which will include oral supplements and foods that have a considerable magnesium content such as avocados. I have actually seen topically applied MO cause diarrhea in some individuals who seem to absorb significant amounts from topical application of MO to a large enough area of the body. Oral magnesium chloride is also well absorbed.

Large dose of Milk of Magnesia: bing.com/images/search?view...

Note: the label says consult doctor if you use it more than once a week,

Not sure what other laxatives are more popular. If you look at their active ingrediencies, the others are potentially more poisonous.

Through the years, I have read that most people have a deficiency of vitamin D3 and Magnesium. My husband with PD, had terrible constipation. He used coffee enemas to make sure he was clearing out daily, but also has had excellent results with high absorption magnesium, 400 mg/day.

Yes, the right form of magnesium can be very effective as a constipation aid, but unfortunately it does not work in every case. One of my PD friends has severe constipation and no amount of magnesium has been effective for him. They even make a magnesium citrate form that is sort of like Seven Up in a green bottle and is carbonated that I believe is strictly for constipation somewhat like milk of magnesia which contains magnesium hydroxide. I think the carbonated citrate version is called Citroma.

Epsom salt, magnesium sulfate, is an old laxitive, but tastes terrible.

Yes, most of the magnesium forms are tough on the taste buds unless they are designed for oral usage. The Citroma (based on magnesium citrate) is tolerable because it is carbonated, flavored and sweetened. I tasted mag oil because magnesium chloride is considered to be very absorbable in liquid or oral forms. That is something I won't be repeating!

Have him consider coffee enemas. They really work, and eliminate the toxins. We should get rid of our poop daily.
