I would really like some advice on eating the right food to save my brain. I have many signs of cognitive impairment which makes me really keen to carry on with the 16 hour fast that I do on most days and to still stay with a keto diet.
But I can't gain weight. I have lost 6 kgs in the last 8 months. I eat sweet potato, lentils, chickpeas as well as meat and veg and cook with coconut oil or olive oil. Also nuts, and seeds, mainly almonds. but no wheat or eggs or corn or vinegar or anything with yeast ( that means cheese and red wine as well ) because I have tested allergic to those things. They were causing the intermittent diarrhea that made me lose weight over the years. I know that pd also causes weight loss. And I do know that exercise and strength training would help, but so far they haven't.
I think perhaps to eat more fruit, but that has very high carbs, and surely that will challenge my brain?
I would be grateful for any advice.

Anybody trying to gain weight would be a real oddity around here. My family history is that if we eat a bowl of jello we gain 5 lbs. You do a 16 hour fast most days. How long have you been doing this. I do not understand the logic that a starved brain is healthier than a brain fed with vitamins and energy to provide what it needs and purge those wastes and heavy metals. Where did this diet come from.? What is the logic?
Maybe eat some of those Vegan meat free hamburgers made from Coconut oil, apparently they have more fat and cholesterol than animal lard.
I have seen many discussions of brain damage from too many carbs. Many people are claiming that they can reverse alzeimers with exercise and keto diets. So I still think keto is right for me.I was just worrying about adding fruit to it all.

The part of our brain that regulates weight is the hypothalamus, it is intimately connected to the limbic system (cognition). Your goal should be to support hypothalamic and limbic function.
I have been researching this subject and the two primary treatments I have encountered are: 1) intranasal insulin and, 2) chromium picolinate supplement.
I think you are on the right track with the Ketogenic diet. There are two additional supplements to consider: NTFactor EnergyLipids powder and Trehalose Complex.
I would like to hear what others have to say on this subject.
You have given me a lot to think about and to research so that I will be able to understand what you are saying .I actually care more about saving my brain than I do about gaining weight. So thank you for taking the time to answer.
I'm with you, I could probably make peace with the physical aspects, but who are we without our brain? Research shows that intranasal insulin dissolves amyloid plaque in AD and I am hopeful it will help me heal my hypothalamus too.
I'm not a doctor and the ideal diet is probably different for everybody but maybe try taking creatine along with strength training. You might not be able to carry on with your 16 hr fast and expect to gain weight though. Putting on weight simply takes calories.
Memory is important and taking steps while your memory is still good to keep it that way might be a good idea now!
I previously posted about a study that used a high potency daily drink of 4 very common probiotics at mega dosing that had positive effects in just 12 weeks in severe AD patients.
If you didn't see the study, I can find it and post it for you or chat it to you. You kind of have to read between the lines to understand the true potential of what the study is showing, but when you consider the safety profile of these four common probiotics and the fact that they didn't even use a prebiotic with the probiotic, you start to understand how much potential is there for people who are at early stage AD or D.
The probiotics may also be helpful in improving your gut biome to a place where you can get more from the food you are taking in and possibly improve your weight status.
I have had intermittent diarhea for more than 30 years. It has actually been my worst problem, worse even than PD, for now anyway. It improved when I found LDN but that has stopped working now.
I spent 10 days in hospital getting a barrage of tests which all came out ok. No cause there for the diarrhea.
Eventually it was suggested that I take a food allergy test and I came out type 3 allergic to yeast, wheat, corn, egg white and yolk and oysters ( not the kind of allergy which can kill, but a food intolerance which can present days after consuming the offending food). At first, when I avoided those foods, everything improved but it came back with a vengeance until I learnt that cheese and red wine both contain yeast.
The reason I am telling you all this is because you posted once about a plan to get off PPI's. I have been taking Nexiam or a generic Nexiam for nearly 10 years and I think that that might be the cause of leaky gut, which would make one prone to have allergies, and diarrhea and at risk for all kinds of disease, not the least being PD.
So I have more than one reason to ask you to post the one you suggested. And, if you can find it, the one about getting off PPI's. I am very interested in finding out more about gut flora. Imagine if it all came back to that simple thing, all my most pressing problems, cognition, diarrhea....maybe even PD?!
And thank you for the time you always take giving careful replies to people and also for many simple little remedies that really work. The one about brufen and coconut oil was a godsend when I had a knee replacement.
I Celtis, since weight loss is not a problem for me I shall skip to memory loss and condition issues. These are frequently caused not by PD but by the meds used to treat it. I,thought I was deteriorating fast but my PD nurse who,has supported me for 15 yrs persuaded me change my drug regime and she has been proven to be correct. The main culprit is Amantadine used to control dyskinesia.
