Day one and i would say no, not worth 80 bucks and no beer! Look on goodRx and its half the price. Fortunately my insurance gets it for $7.

Im going to keep taking it with hope that it builds up over time but I heard from my good friend that it should have kicked in with the first dose.

Try it and see how you do.

Depends on how much a little bit of help is worth to you.

Hi chco. I took Selegiline between 1994 and 2002. I had to give up taking it becasue of very high blood pressure. My condition had improved so much at that stage that I was able to stay off all Pd medication and have lived a normal life since then.

If you would like to learn more about how I did all that then look at my website - reverseparkinsons.net and contact me. It will cost you nothing!

I have your book :-) Can you elaborate on Selegiline, How much did you take, best time of day with Food (before during or after meal) or without food? And what is/was the benefit/s of Selegiline. I understand it helps make the C/L last longer which I could use, but I'm not wanting to take Selegiline because when I tried only a time or 2 it seemed to make me constipated but not I have not tested too much. I do not have high blood pressure.

Hi jayb1. There is only one dose for selegiline and that is one tablet twice a day. Taking more or less defeats the objective. I don't think it matter when you take it. I took it before eating but was never told when to take it.

You must realize that selegiline stops the body's natural breakdown of dopamine, because why would we want to break down dopamine if we don't have enough of it? The body has to get rid of every chemical it produces if the chemical has not been use within a certain time. Every chemical has a shelf-life. Be careful with selegiline, it also stops the breakdown of tyramine, which can affect your blood pressure. You have to watch your blood pressure when you take selegiline.

Hi John,

Have a nice day.. please help on below...

1> will selegiline increases Blood pressure?

2> what are the side effects, that you have observed while you taking selegiline beteen 1994 -2002?

3> Post 2002 do feel that continuing selegiline is good or bad?

JohnPepper profile image
JohnPepper in reply toVishwa228

Selegiline can cause raised blood pressure, which it did with me.

The only side effect was the raised blood pressure,

jayb12 profile image
jayb12 in reply toJohnPepper

why not 1 5mg a day?

JohnPepper profile image
JohnPepper in reply tojayb12

Because that is the manufacturer's stated dose!

Vishwa228 profile image
Vishwa228 in reply toJohnPepper

So Selegiline will not improve/create dopamine?

Just be aware that Mr Pepper does not have the same PD as most of us. His is not idiopathic but he doesnt know what type.

Selegeline is the old med. the newer drug is Rasagiline tradename Azilect. Selegiline is fat soluble, I think that means it may take a while to build up in your fat tissue and to get the full effect.

Kwinholt profile image
Kwinholt in reply toHikoi

Thank you Hikoi, I was just thinking what have I been missing (meaning Selegiline) but after your post it makes sense. I was given Azilect right from the start with my cd/ld . So I guess I’m in the know 😊. K

At the third month of taking selegeline i started getting horrible headaches due to my bp skyrocketing. My neuro said cut down by half a pill per day but i cut down to just one pill a day. After 2 weeks the headaches improved but since then, i have had the worst case of depression and anxiety i ever had. No change in motor symptoms since reducing the dose other than more shaky hands when im anxious.

The depression really bothers me. I feel like im never going to feel happiness for more than a fleeting moment again. So out of desperation I went on amazon.com and bought a bunch of supplements like b12, L carnosine, lithium orotatec320 mg, co q10 with pqq. Im really messed up now. My next appointment is 8/27. Anhedonia, the inability to feel joy, is the worst feeling in the world! I dont feel motivated to do anything i used to like. Im afraid that im going to drag my wife and kids down with me. Very scared!

Im hanging in there till my next appointment and im going to ask for a psych referral.

Swear to god I’m not selling this. I have taken many supplements and on C/l. Restore Gold at the full dose helped a TON with depression and hopelessness. Maybe give it a try. Didn’t help much with motors symptom like c/l?

Bass hang in there. Thinking of you x You are one of the people that inspired me when I I found this forum a year ago.

PDGal4 profile image
PDGal4 in reply tobassofspades

bassofspades Sending my support as well to hang in there. Hopefully temporary. I would urge if you can to get an appointment sooner for the referral. I have been in therapy for7 years since diagnosis and has been enormously helpful in learning coping skills and resources that work best for me. One that helps is engaging the senses, be it shower or bath, enjoying a hot cup of tea with lots of honey, getting a massage, buying cut flowers to enjoy, indulging ina favorite food or sweet, reading, etc. or distracting, which for me means mindless games.

chartist’s link offers some options although I’d caveat as follows:

St Johns Wort: don’t think recommended for high blood pressure

Ginseng: I took for years but stopped on recommendation of acupuncturist. Can keep you awake.

5-HTP:I had an instant reaction to one dose of this, as in horrible horrible stomachache and overall feeling terrible, and read after taking not to take with c/l. It took me days to weeks to recover.

you got it..

bassofspades profile image
bassofspades in reply toPDGal4

Have to be careful. St johns and 5htp effect the serotonin system and if you're taking an mao inhibitor you can get killed. Come to think of it, im pretty stupid myself for messing around with rx meds and supplements together!!

the less meds the better, try to work out as much as possible!! dont let pd get the best of you, good luck..

bass,

One other option to consider :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/273...

And this other potential reason:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/311...

Keep us posted on how you make out!

Thanks Art, im so glad that you're back!! Im going to keep these things in mind but for now I should probably hold off on the supplements for fear of adverse synergistic reactions! Although green tea is probably ok. I'll see if i can get off selegiline and try something similar but not as dicey when I see my neurologist iin 2 weeks. Maybe the patches.

chartist profile image
chartist in reply tobassofspades

That sounds like a good plan of action, bass!

bass,

Are patches an option to give a more even delivery of the selegiline and possibly help with the associated problems? Just thinking out loud.

Here is a basic list of herbs which have helped some people with depression :

medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

Synbiotics (probiotic + prebiotic) are also showing the ability to help with depression in humans and have a good safety profile while increasing serum BDNF :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/313...

bassofspades profile image
bassofspades in reply tochartist

I eat a lot of yogurt, does that count as probiotics?

chartist profile image
chartist in reply tobassofspades

That would likely be a yes and a no. Yes, it likely has probiotic content, but the sugar content may be high adding to the inflammatory process and possibly negating the probiotic effects if any.

bass, one thing I am realizing about probiotic/prebiotic/synbiotic studies is that some of the best studies that actually got positive results such as the Alzheimer' probiotic study is that these particular studies used very high doses of very common good gut bacteria to good effect. No exotic variety bacteria that can be patented and get quite expensive, but rather the really common stuff that is cheap...they just used lots of it!

Let's say that bacteria counts for normal probiotics were measured in milligrams, well some of these studies would be using grams by comparison and getting results in 12 weeks or less! Actually they use the term CFU's, but I think you get the point of what I am saying.Just look at the study I linked to above and look how high the synbiotic dosing is that got "real results" !!!
