Not sleeping well anymore.

I know that not sleeping well goes along with the PD however , for my first 5 years I have been so fortunate to have no issues with that at all. I just thought maybe all my exercise helped it and working ect . I am tired and ready to sleep. So... for the past week I have been plagued with not sleeping at night. I’m was just wondering is it because the so called “honeymoon first 5 years” are over and things will get worse for me? What do you guys do or take for your insomnia. I have been stressed lately with other life issues but thought I had that under control but maybe not as well as I thought . Any input would be appreciated. Thank you my friends . Karen

Stress aggravates everything. Being adequately medicated is important. When I need help sleeping I use the herb Valerian root.

I take melatonin every night.

I've started taking melatonin most nights. It helps me feel sleepy. It seems to help me go to bed earlier, but I still often wake up after four hours.

I often take another one if that happens. I only take 2.5 mg.

Sounds like you went from sleeping pretty good to poor sleep from one week to the next. I don't think PD moves that fast.

I do believe , now that I think about it , the stress is probably more of a factor but I keep reading that the first 5 years are the honeymoon period and after that it starts progressing faster but I know that we are all different. I think I just got scared . Thank you for responding and making me sit back and relax. Karen

In response to concern about the honeymoon period I posted the following:

Magnesium is an essential factor for a better sleep and cognition. I have tried different types of magnesium and the best I have found is MagTech from Natural Stacks.I give it 10 out of 10 for cognition and sleep. After that Aximagnesio almost with the same rating but for different purposes including facilitating Thiamine absorption and GI health.

They are both incredibly expensive products to obtain in the UK; guess it goes to show 'you get what you pay for'!

Hi Glen, you are right , they are expensive in comparison with other magnesium products.

Sleep is a fragile thing now. If I have anything on my mind it evaporates. All worries look big these days. Melatonin is not very helpful for me. If I need to I take half of the lowest dose of Xanax. I would rather not take any benzodiazepines but I need to sleep.

Thank you all for your input. I did buy some magnesium because I also know it helps with constipation too. I’ll give it a try . Karen

High-dose thiamine cured the constipation problem for me. Worth considering if you have not yet given it a try.

Park Bear, actually that has been another fortunate thing , at this point, I have not been plagued with as others is the constipation. I again thought it could be from all my exercise , water and fruits and veggies. I just thought it an added bonus with the magnesium. And yes I had given the B1 thiamin a try , and I am one of the ones it did not work for. Extremely worse. I am so happy for the people it does help . Thanks for your input , I truly appreciate it. Another helpful book might be The Circadian Code by Dr Satchin Panda. Am currently reading it as recommended by my wife, all about resetting your body clock properly with eating times, exercise and daylight exposure. Sounds like it has a lot of health benefits in addition to sleeping well if you make a few minor adjustments to your daily routine. Hardest one for me is giving up midnight snacks as it advises leaving a 12 hour nightime window of not eating ie nothing after 8 pm then nothing before 8 am. If you think stress is a factor try Headspace ( headspace.com/ ) a meditation guide online? and an app, first 10 lessons are free and i found those enough to get started and didn't bother with subscription though my wife has paid and has a go every day.

Everyone's replies are good information. I know at times I have sleep issues, magnesium citrate is the one I take, 1 pill at 200mg at night. It helps a bit, as I usually wake with stiffness and active legs.

CBD oil or other could help. But one thing I have figured as everyone does is that stress no matter how well you think you have under control is a big problem to us Parkies. Very little amounts that don't seem like anything exasperates our symptoms. We are magnets for stress and once it starts to collect the stress it's difficult to get rid of it.

My father has PD (10yrs) and has difficulty sleeping exacerbated by restless legs syndrome. He finds sleeping in a bed difficult sometimes and nods in in chairs more quickly but this isn’t ideal for posture. These posts are really helpful - we’ve tried the following solutions with positive results: magnesium, cbd oil dabbed on the feet and ingested, foot baths before bed, breathing exercises, Alexander technique, massage, listening to audiobooks and really good results from a circulation booster you plant your feet in for 30 mins.

He sleeps well in cars and on vibrating mattresses - something about the movement helps the sleep to kick in. Also reducing stress by de-complicating life and plenty of fresh air and regular exercise. Hope this helps.. breathe in, breathe out .. repeat :-)
